Family Travel Safety Tips
A Comprehensive Guide for Parents Traveling Abroad with Kids
Traveling abroad with kids is one of life’s greatest pleasures but keeping your family safe in unfamiliar environments requires thoughtful preparation. At Slow Traveling Family, we’ve spent over two years navigating crowded markets, foreign transit systems, and unexpected emergencies with our kids in tow.
Through trial, error, and plenty of “learning moments,” we’ve developed a safety-first mindset that lets us explore confidently.
This guide distills our hard-earned wisdom into actionable strategies, tools, and mindset shifts to help your family stay safe while traveling abroad with kids.
Why Family Travel Safety Matters
Drop the Fear & Take Back Your Freedom
When we first started traveling full-time with our kids, I’ll admit: I lost sleep imagining worst-case scenarios. What if they wander off in a foreign train station? What if someone scams us? What if they get sick from street food?
Then it hit me. Trying to eliminate risk is like trying to control the weather. You can’t command a Moroccan market to be less chaotic or force a Bangkok tuk-tuk driver to slow down. But you can arm yourself with knowledge, tools, and a plan—so when surprises happen (and they will!), you’re ready to respond calmly, not react out of fear.
Preparation Is The Antidote to Travel Anxiety
Does wrapping your family in a protective bubble and stomping around abroad in constant high-alert mode sound like a good plan? It really isn’t! After all, we travel because of the joy it brings. Travel anxiety can suck the joy out of everyone’s experience faster than a melted gelato drips onto a white shirt. Travel anxiety can really spoil everybody’s fun, so we need a way to deal with it.
Here’s what’s worked for us to turn panic into agency (and actually enjoy those priceless family moments):
1. Research, Don’t Assume
Before arriving in a new country, we:
- Read travel blogs to pinpoint real risks (spoiler: most “dangers” are overblown).
- Talk to families who’ve been there. If you don’t know anyone in your circle, try searching online forums, like Reddit or Facebook groups. Consider asking:
- “What safety issues caught you off guard?”
- “Which neighborhoods felt safest with kids?”
- “What scams should we watch for?”
- Study Cultural Norms
A gesture or outfit that’s harmless at home could cause offense abroad. We always:- Study local etiquette basics (e.g., covering shoulders in temples, avoiding left-hand gestures in Morocco).
- Teach kids phrases like “No, thank you” in the local language to politely deflect vendors.
2. Plan for the “Big 3” Risks
Every destination has its quirks, but these three issues plague nearly every parent.
- Lost Kids: We drill the “freeze and shout” rule and pack GPS watches.
- Scams: Be aware of common scams and research strategies to protect yourself.
- Illnesses: Pre-trip, we keep our med kit well stocked and bookmark nearby clinics. We always have emergency numbers saved in our phone, and NEVER travel without family medical insurance.
Reliable internet plays a bigger role in safety than many families expect. This guide to reliable pocket WiFi for families explains why.
Core Principles of Family Travel Safety
These four pillars shape everything we do when traveling as a family with kids:
1. Preparation: The Foundation of Safe Travel
- Childproofing accommodations: Learn how to secure rentals and hotels like a pro.
- Packing smart: Never leave home without essential safety gear like GPS trackers and first-aid kits.
- Researching cultural norms: Avoid misunderstandings by studying local customs in advance.
2. Situational Awareness: Your Superpower
Situational awareness is your family’s travel spidey-sense.
It helps you spot potential risks before they turn into real problems.
In this blog post, I share how one of our travel experiences hammered home why situational awareness matters with kids.
Try Our “5-Second Scan”
When entering a new place, we all (yes, even the kids!) pause to spot:
☑️ Exits
☑️ “Safe strangers” (uniformed staff, other parents)
☑️ Potential hazards (like unfenced balconies at Airbnb rentals)
3. Adaptability: Expect the Unexpected
- Handling emergencies: From medical crises to natural disasters, rehearse your response.
- Tech as a lifeline: Use apps and devices to track kids in crowds or communicate during emergencies.
4. Teaching Kids to Be Partners in Safety
- Empowering them with tools: “If you’re separated, find a mom with kids and show her your wristband.”
- Role-playing scenarios like getting lost or spotting scams.
