Our Stay at RIU Palace Santa Maria: The Full Experience

Spoiler: It was amazing. Here’s why we think it’s the best RIU in Cape Verde.

In December 2022, our family of four stayed at the RIU Palace Santa Maria. It was nothing short of amazing! I’ll share an overview of our first-hand experience and then in the next section, we can address some of the negative TripAdvisor reviews.

1. Awarded 2024 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best

We’re not the only guests raving about RIU Palace Santa Maria. In 2024, this RIU resort was handed Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Award for the Best of the Best Hotels category. This award celebrates excellence in the travel industry and is given to the top 1% of businesses that achieve the highest volume of over and above reviews from travellers.

2. Enjoy the Convenience of Being Close To Everything

Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria is not only a stone’s throw from the beach, but also in close walking distance to Santa Maria town centre. We walked 1.9 km along the beach to the centre in around 30 minutes. Pro tip: your calves will thank you for walking on the firm sand along the shoreline (unless you’re up for the extra workout!). Alternatively, you could catch a very short taxi ride from the hotel reception.

If you’ve got young kids, you’ll likely appreciate the less than 30-minute transfer from the airport. In fact, all three of the RIU hotels in Sal are just over 18 km from Amílcar Cabral International Airport so they’re pretty equal in that respect.

RIU Palace Boavista and RIU Karamboa on Boa Vista Island are even closer to the airport. A fellow blogger walked the 1.5 km journey in just 10 minutes! However, the distance to Sal Rei puts them at a slight disadvantage. We like to walk out from our resort, and an 8 km walk into the nearest large town would be too far for the kids. 

3. Experience More Luxurious Rooms and Amenities

RIU has three hotel brands, with the RIU Palace brand offering more modern rooms and a more refined experience. The rooms at the RIU Palace Santa Maria lived up to this expectation in our experience.

Standard features include air conditioning, private bathrooms, a mini-fridge, a drinks optic with premium-brand alcohol, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

During our stay, we opted for a Grande Double Room. It comfortably accommodated our family with a double bed and a double sofa bed for the children. If, however, you have older children we’d recommend booking a family room for more space.

While most reviews praise the rooms for their modern design and comfort, some guests have mentioned worn furniture in certain rooms. In our experience, our room was well-maintained and furnished to a high standard. However, variations in room conditions can exist.

4. Six Swimming Pools, a Kid’s Pool, AND a Waterpark!

Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria has not one, not two, or even three swimming pools. In total, there are six outdoor swimming pools (including one with a swim-up bar for adults). Add to that a dedicated kid’s pool with slides (which our two loved!) and Splash Water World for over 12-year-olds.

The sheer amount of pools means you can always find sun loungers, no matter the time of day. Also, the swimming pools are heated throughout the winter which is always a plus point.

5. Indulge In A Wide Variety of Delicious Food

The RIU Palace Santa Maria resort has a fantastic range of dining experiences. From the international buffet with live cooking stations to specialty a la carte restaurants, there are plenty of choices.

We loved the variety and quality of the food. The main buffet restaurant was our go-to spot for our evening meal. There’s also a smaller buffet restaurant closer to the beach where we ate breakfast and lunch.

If you fancy trying out the a la carte options, you can choose from Italian, Fusion, Japanese, and a Steakhouse. Some TripAdvisor reviews have mentioned limited options at the Italian restaurant. We didn’t visit that restaurant so can’t comment but if you’re aware in advance you won’t be disappointed.

To reserve a table at the specialty restaurants, you’ll need to use the RIU app. You can book your spot up to four days in advance, and we recommend doing so asap as they get snatched up quickly!

One of our favourite things to do after breakfast was to visit the Cappuccino Patisserie in the hotel reception. We enjoyed the Tia Maria coffee and the kids loved trying out all the cakes!

We found that vegetarian options were readily available throughout the resort’s restaurants. Since our visit, we discovered that one of our children has a gluten intolerance. We were pleased to find reviews mentioning the availability of gluten-free bread upon request at reception.

However, it’s worth noting that, like many all-inclusive resorts with buffet-style dining, cross-contamination can be a concern for those with coeliac disease or strict dietary restrictions. While the resort does a good job separating food stations (salads, breads, meats, etc.), it’s always wise to exercise caution and inquire about ingredients and preparation methods.

6. Have Fun with Lively Entertainment and Activities

The dedicated animation team brings an infectious energy to the resort with lively music and dancing by the pool. Reviews will tell you that’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but for us, it was a highlight of the holiday!

During the day guests can participate in beach football and volleyball games. It was great to see staff members actively engaging with guests, encouraging them to join in the fun. We even had staff members approach us by the pool, asking if we’d like to join in. While we opted to relax that day, it was clear that others were having a great time!

Entertainment continues into the evenings with live shows. RIU also hosts a themed “RIU Party” once a week at the neighboring RIU Funana Hotel. Guests at the RIU Palace Santa Maria (adults and children) can attend free of charge. It’s a great opportunity to dress up and let your hair down.

7. Relax Thanks To Babysitting and Childcare Services

The RIU Palace Santa Maria offers comprehensive childcare options to help families enjoy their holidays. The RiuLand kids’ club provides structured activities for two age groups: children aged 4-7 and 8-12 years.

RiuLand keeps children occupied through supervised activities. The resort’s animation team leads outdoor games, beach activities, and group interactions. The kids’ club typically runs throughout the day, giving you more flexibility.

The resort also offers babysitting services, allowing parents to enjoy some private time during their stay.

Our children didn’t use the kid’s club during our stay in Cape Verde. They preferred to stay with us and we’re fine with that! But if your kids are more confident it gives them the opportunity to make new friends and create memories during your holiday.

Whether you use the kids’ club or not, it’s great to have the option.

8. Feel Welcomed By Friendly and Attentive Staff

One of the things that truly sets the RIU Palace Santa Maria apart is its incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with warm smiles and a genuine willingness to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

When we arrived at the hotel, along with everyone else from the transfer bus we found ourselves in a queue for check-in. This wasn’t a problem – we were handed a glass of champagne each and juice for the kids. After a long travel day, this really helped us to relax and settle into the holiday vibes from the get-go.

As you walk around the resort, you’ll encounter staff members with a smile on their faces. Numerous RIU Palace Santa Maria Reviews on TripAdvisor mention the attentive waiters and waitresses in the restaurants. We found them to be very attentive – always ready to clear plates and offer assistance.

The complimentary poolside drinks service is also a favorite among guests. We liked the fact that we could stay hydrated through the day without leaving the sun lounger.

9. Save Time with a Digital Concierge At Your Fingertips

The RIU app provides easy access to information and services at your fingertips.

One of the app’s most convenient features is the ability to book reservations at the a la carte restaurants. You can browse menus, select your preferred time slot, and secure your table up to four days in advance. This eliminates the need to queue or worry about availability.

We were also grateful for the apps room service capabilities. Our hotel room was on the opposite side of the resort to the reception so being able to order extra pillows and drinks without leaving the room was a godsend. Just be aware, the service isn’t instant. We found that if we ordered something in the morning, it would arrive by that evening. This type of convenience adds a touch of luxury to your stay.

Addressing the Negative Reviews

There will ALWAYS be negative reviews. It’s impossible to please everyone. I’ve read hundreds of TripAdvisor reviews, including the one, two, and three-stars to get an idea of what guests didn’t like. Let’s address these issues so you can decide whether they’re a deal-breaker for you.

• Toilet facilities: We can vouch for the shortage of toilet facilities in public areas, particularly around the pool and the main restaurant. On several occasions I found myself dashing from the restaurant to the toilets in the entertainment area with one of the kids.
• Music (too little, too loud!): Some guests complained about loud music by the pool, and others about the lack of background music in the bar lounge area. For us, music wasn’t an issue. It’s impossible to please everybody on this one.
• Mosquitos, birds, and flies: Yep, you will likely get bitten by mosquitos at some point, and there are birds (little sparrows) in the outdoor eating areas. We didn’t experience the flies on the food though, which a couple of reviewers mentioned.
• Small gym with limited equipment requires booking two days in advance.
• Rooms do not have double beds as pictured online but two singles pushed together. This could be a positive as it gives you flexibility to separate them if you have older children.
• Lack of variety on the menu at the Italian restaurant.
• No lifts in the accommodation blocks make it difficult for guests with mobility issues. Also, the resort is spread out and requires a lot of walking to get between different areas.
• Entertainment is repetitive. Guests staying for two weeks reported seeing the same shows twice.
• Several guests report getting ill, possibly due to a sickness bug or food contamination. We didn’t get the sickness bug (thankfully!).

Many of the negative reviews come down to personal preference. Being aware in advance can help you decide whether these niggles come become a big issue on your holiday.
