But it wasn’t all easy. One of our biggest lessons came after our daughter had a scooter accident on a local park. It was a wake-up call that changed how we moved through the city with kids in tow.

So… Where Should Families Stay in Agadir?

Agadir might look small on the map, but each neighbourhood has its own feel. Some areas are more touristy and central. Others are entirely local, filled with the sounds of children playing football in the street, neighbours gathered in conversation, and the layered echo of the call to prayer from nearby mosques.

Over six months, we moved between six very different neighbourhoods. None of them were silent or still, but many felt deeply communal, full of life in a way that was both energising and humbling.

Some gave us space for beach days and grocery runs. Others brought unexpected friendships, new routines, and lessons we didn’t see coming. 1. Abbatoir: Central, Safe, and Close to Beautiful Parks

Abbatoir may not be the most glamorous name, but this neighbourhood was one of the most balanced and practical areas we stayed in. Nestled between the coast and the souk, it offered us a real taste of local life with plenty of space for the kids to roam and play.

The area is a mix: some well-paved, clean boulevards with wide sidewalks and palm trees, and some rundown, industrial side streets that link them together. You’ll see apartment blocks going up — it’s clearly developing — but it still feels lived-in and real.

Despite how it looks in places, we always felt safe here, even walking home in the dark after dinner or a late trip to the park.

Why it worked for our family:

• Close to Souk El Had (about a 10-minute walk), but far enough away to avoid the noise and crowds
• Easy access to Jardin Ibn Zaidoun: one of the few green spaces in Agadir, with a playground, skatepark, and huge shade trees
• A 30-minute walk to the beach, or a quick taxi if you’re carrying snacks, towels, or tired toddlers
• Local shops and bakeries nearby for daily basics so no need to drive anywhere for groceries or snacks

Our experience:

We stayed in a first-floor apartment with a balcony and a shared pool, which unfortunately was under maintenance during our stay. That particular flat is no longer available to rent, but the area is still full of family-friendly apartments with similar layouts.

We especially appreciated the quietness of the residential streets. Not silent, but far less chaotic than some other neighbourhoods we lived in. Head 10 minutes in either direction, and you’ll find yourself in much livelier areas, with crowds spilling out from the souk or heading toward the coastal hotels.

Kid-friendly tips:

• Bring a scooter or football for the park as there’s space to burn off energy
• The green zone inside Jardin Ibn Zaidoun was one of our favourite spots in the whole city — peaceful, shaded, and ideal for downtime

2. Founty: Upmarket Beachside Comfort

Founty was the most polished and convenient neighbourhood we stayed in. It’s a solid choice for families who want easy access to the beach, walkable streets, and familiar amenities without being in the middle of a tourist strip.

Just a short walk from the sand, Founty has a more European feel than other parts of Agadir, with wide pavements, modern apartments, and less traffic. It’s a popular area for both locals and longer-term visitors, and we found it to be one of the simplest areas for day-to-day life.

Why it worked for our family

• 5–10 minutes to the beach on foot
• Streets are wide, walkable, and well-kept
• Marjane hypermarket nearby for groceries, snacks, and Christmas decorations!
• Less chaotic than central Agadir, but still close to restaurants and cafés (we loved O’Sushi Lounge for a break from tagine)

Our experience

We spent a full month in Founty over Christmas and New Year, and it worked really well for our family. The kids had space to move, the beach was close enough for regular walks, and we appreciated how easy and convenient everything felt, especially during a season when it’s easy to feel far from home.

Celebrating Christmas in Agadir as a non-touristy family required a bit of creativity. Morocco doesn’t mark the holiday, so if you’re coming with kids who are used to festive traditions, you’ll need to put in a little extra effort to make it special. We managed to find a small artificial tree and some decorations at Marjane, and spent the day at the beach and by the apartment pool. It wasn’t traditional, but it was warm, relaxed, and surprisingly memorable.

Where to stay

Founty has a higher concentration of aparthotels and small hotels compared to other parts of Agadir, which makes it ideal if you’re looking for turnkey comfort with a little more independence. Kitchenettes, pools, and onsite staff are common.

It’s also one of the more affluent areas in the city, so expect to pay a bit more here than in more local neighbourhoods. That said, being so close to the beach (without needing a car or a taxi) made it worth it for us, especially during a longer stay over the holidays.

Located about 8km north of central Agadir, Anza is a working coastal town that blends sea views, local life, and a developing surf scene. While not built for tourists, it’s welcoming, practical, and full of small discoveries, especially if you’re staying a little longer.

It’s one of those places where mountain and sea meet. Most accommodations offer views of both, and the sunsets over the Atlantic from our kitchen window were breathtaking.

Why it worked for our family

• A Carrefour supermarket in town for groceries, toiletries, and household basics
• Souk Anza every Wednesday, open all day, perfect for fresh produce, clothes, and household items
• Corniche walkway with wide pavements
• A few friendly cafés (Black & White was our go-to)
• A small gym Rick used regularly which a rare find in a town this size

Our experience

We stayed in Anza during January and February 2025, and loved the big skies, open sea, and slower pace. While we needed to taxi into Agadir for some errands, like paying our Inwi internet bill, we found everything else we needed right in town.

The ATMs were tricky to locate (there’s one tucked away near the seafront and another a little farther back), and the local dinosaur museum was sadly always closed when we passed by in January and February 2025. But we still had fun searching for real dinosaur footprints in the beach rocks, which was a big hit with the kids.

Anza isn’t polished, but that’s part of its charm. If you’re happy with a bit of uneven paving and lots of stray dogs, you’ll be rewarded with space, views, and a strong sense of place.

Family-friendly tips

• Pack sturdy shoes for clambering on the rocks (especially if you’re dino hunting)
• Bring cash just in case: the only working ATM we found was down by the seafront
• The beach isn’t ideal for swimming (surf and currents are strong), but it’s perfect for walking, rock exploring, and watching the waves

Family-Friendly Apartments in Anza

It offered a slower, more grounded side of Agadir life, with everything we needed nearby: small cafés, local bakeries, fruit stalls, and one of the city’s best health food shops just around the corner.

Why it worked for our family

• A run-down but lively community park where our kids made friends every day

• Residential feel, but still easy walking access to the souk and city centre
• Local cafés, convenience shops, and snack bars all within a few blocks

Our experience

We stayed in a simple apartment tucked into a quiet street, and despite the modest surroundings, our kids thrived here. The local park wasn’t fancy, the play equipment had definitely seen better day, but it didn’t matter. Every evening, the park filled with children, and ours were right there with them, laughing, running, and making up games. It was community in its purest form.

It was also one of the better areas for day-to-day errands on foot. We had easy access to shops, fruit sellers, and taxis when needed. While it may not appeal to those looking for beach views or polished cafés, Sidi Youssef was a practical, friendly, and honest place to live, especially for longer stays.

Bouargane isn’t polished or quiet. It’s alive. A true Moroccan neighbourhood where daily life spills into the streets: scooters zip past at speed, kids play football in the dust, and vendors call out their wares from street corners. It’s not touristy and that’s exactly what makes it so raw and rich.

Why it works for families

• A tight-knit community where neighbours know each other
• Shops and snack stalls on every block so it’s easy to self-cater
• Central, walkable, and close to Cité El Mohammadi for taxis and day trips

Our story

Bouargane was the setting for one of the most intense experiences of our travels. Our daughter’s foot was run over by an electric scooter, and she needed surgery at a local private hospital. It was a traumatic moment, but what followed was a blessing in disguise.

The person who accidentally hit her? Her mother was a nurse. Their family rushed us to the hospital, checked in on us every few days, and lovingly helped tend to our daughter’s wound during her recovery. From that painful moment grew an unexpected friendship and we’re still in touch with them today.

It was a stark reminder: even in places that feel safe, street awareness matters. But it was also a lesson in forgiveness, grace, and human connection.

Kid-friendly tips

• Streets can be hectic: closed shoes, high-vis bags, and constant supervision are musts
• Make sure kids stay on the inside of the pavement and don’t run ahead as scooters often mount curbs
• That said, the local kids were incredibly welcoming. Our children were included in games from day one

Where we stayed

We lived in a small, ground-floor apartment beneath the owners, another family who treated us like their own. They cooked us harira soup, brought over couscous on Fridays, and invited us into their home for tea. Because we stayed during Ramadan and Eid, they also shared a tray of homemade Eid biscuits with us. We’re still in touch with them today.

Hay Salam is one of Agadir’s busiest residential districts; a place where daily life is loud, fast, and full of energy. With its growing student population, the area has a youthful, fashionable edge: trendy clothes shops, barbers, cafés, and fast-food spots line the main roads. But it’s not touristy.

Why it works for families

• Affordable apartments in well-connected areas
• Supermarkets, pharmacies, and snack stalls are all walkable
• Fast WiFi and plenty of cafés make it a practical base for longer stays

Our story

We stayed in Jet Sakane Argana, a housing complex on the edge of Hay Salam. Our apartment was on the ground floor, with a view of the car park in front and a leafy communal garden out back. While traffic and scooters meant we didn’t let our kids play freely out front, the complex itself felt safe and neighbourly.

We had fast internet for remote work, and the local shops covered everything from groceries to tech repairs. Yes, there were a couple of cockroaches during our stay (ground floor realities!), but overall, it was one of the more functional and well-connected places we stayed.

Where to stay

Look for listings in Hay Salam or Jet Sakane Argana. The beach (5.5 km) and Souk El Had (4.5 km) aren’t walkable, but taxis and ride apps are cheap and frequent. If you want a lively local area with youthful energy and practical perks, Hay Salam delivers.

What We Learned from Living in Agadir

Living in six different Agadir neighbourhoods over six months taught us more than any guidebook could. Here are some of the seemingly small things that made a big difference:

• Ground floor = more cockroaches
  Across several rentals, we noticed a clear pattern: the closer to street level, the more unwelcome insect visitors. Not a dealbreaker for us, but worth noting if you’re squeamish. Higher floors (2nd or 3rd) were far better in that respect.
• Foreigners, especially families, are often seen as ‘rich tourists’
  This meant frequent begging, especially around Souk El Had or busier city streets. We tried to stay compassionate without compromising our boundaries. We gave fruit, bread, or water instead of cash, and used these moments to talk with our kids about generosity, dignity, and discernment.
• Staying with local hosts was always more enriching
  The homes where Moroccan families lived upstairs or downstairs offered more than just shelter. They offered connection.
  We were brought Friday couscous, hot bowls of harira, and even gifted homemade Eid biscuits during Ramadan. We are still in touch with several amazing Moroccan families we met along the way.

Staying Safe with Kids in Agadir

Agadir felt safe overall. The locals were friendly, neighbourhoods felt welcoming, and there is a family-friendly vibe. But like many fast-growing cities, you’ll need to stay alert, especially with young kids.

Here’s what we learned from experience (and a few too many close calls):

• Scooters often ride on pavements.
  They’re fast, quiet, and don’t always slow down. We kept our kids close and made sure they walked on the inside edge of the pavement.
• Traffic rules are flexible.
  Lanes are more like guidelines. Zebra crossings don’t always mean much, so cross carefully and lead by example.
• Trip hazards are everywhere.
  Uneven curbs, potholes, and the occasional stray dog mean you’ll want to look where you’re walking, especially at night.
• Bring a carbon monoxide alarm.
• We don’t take this lightly. Ours saved our lives in Tangier when a water heater started leaking CO. Without it, we would’ve had no idea anything was wrong.

After Our Daughter’s Accident…

After our daughter’s foot was run over by an electric scooter, we became a lot more cautious. Thankfully, she made a full recovery, but it was a wake-up call. Here’s what we now recommend to all traveling families:

• Closed-toe shoes, not sandals, even in hot weather
• A small first aid kit: antiseptic wipes, plasters, bandages, and tweezers came in handy more than once

Yes, and we’d likely choose Founty or Hay Salam again. Founty offers walkability, beach access, and quiet evenings, while Hay Salam feels more local and budget-friendly with great amenities. But honestly, each area had something to offer, depending on your stage of travel, your budget, and your bandwidth as a parent.

We visited in December and, to be honest, most of our days were spent bouncing between the beach and the pool. We barely wore anything other than swimwear, sun hats, and a few lightweight cover-ups you could just throw on. It made getting out the door super easy.

Beach & Pool Essentials for Families

Cape Verde’s beaches are to die for. Many are kid-friendly and great for paddling, but it’s worth knowing that you’re still on the Atlantic Ocean here, and conditions can vary quite a bit depending on the season.

If you’re visiting during the windier months (usually between November and March), the waves can get surprisingly strong. It’s definitely not the calm, still sea you’d find in the Med. In some spots, swimming might be off-limits altogether.

That said, there’s no reason why you can’t still enjoy the beach with little ones, as long as you come prepared.

Keep Your Cool (Literally)

Shade is almost non-existent on most Cape Verde beaches, especially if you’re not at a hotel with loungers and umbrellas. If you’re traveling with younger kids or babies, you’ll want to create your own shady space.

We really recommend packing a lightweight pop-up tent or sun shelter. Something quick to set up and easy to pack down that will provide your little ones a place to nap, snack, or just take a break from the heat.

• Large towel or a sand-resistant beach blanket

Toiletries & First Aid: What You Actually Need

You can buy the basics in Cape Verde, but unless you want to spend part of your holiday searching for teething gel or paying triple for kids’ sunscreen, it’s worth packing what you need ahead of time.

Sun, Bugs & Ocean Life

Mosquitos were definitely around when we visited in December, especially in the evenings. We’d highly recommend bringing mosquito spray, even if you’re staying at a resort. If you’re travelling with little ones, you might prefer a DEET-free insect repellent (we’ve tried citronella-based sprays and had decent results), but either way, don’t skip it.

We also like to use reef-safe sunscreen. It’s good for the environment and kinder on sensitive skin. One of our favourites even claims to offer jellyfish sting protection, which is a nice extra given that Portuguese Man O’ War jellyfish can sometimes be spotted in Cape Verde’s waters. (None of us got stung, thankfully, but we were glad to have it just in case.)

Tip: Even if your resort has a shop, stock can be limited, and you might be far from the nearest pharmacy if you need something in a hurry.

The Funny Tummy Kit

One of the most common complaints travellers have—not just in Cape Verde—is an unsettled stomach. Maybe it’s the change in water, or just trying unfamiliar food, but tummy trouble can really derail a day.

We always bring:

• Tablet with downloaded shows or movies – Absolute lifesaver for flights and lazy post-beach evenings. Don’t forget the headphones (the kid-sized, volume-limited kind are ideal).
• Kindle Paperwhite Kids – Lightweight, glare-free in bright sun, and lets kids read for hours without screen time guilt, or the need to pack a pile of books.
• Compact games or puzzles – Magnetic travel games, mini memory cards, or anything that won’t vanish under a plane seat. Some of our favourites for older kids are Monopoly Deal and Sussed.
• A small toy or soft doll – One familiar favourite goes a long way when they’re tired or overwhelmed.
• Camera or binoculars – For older kids, this turned out to be a hit, especially when we went dolphin watching or on nature walks.

All the RIU hotels in Agadir (except for RIU Palace Tikida Taghazout) are close to each other along the Agadir Beach promenade. Their beachfront location is a huge draw for families—because who doesn’t want to be steps away from the sand and sea?

When it comes to exploring beyond the hotel, the RIU properties are about 3.4 km from Souk El Had, Morocco’s largest souk. On foot, this took us around 45 minutes, though with two curious kids in tow (and plenty of stops to inspect every interesting sight along the way!), it felt shorter. If you’re after something closer, there’s also a small local souk just across the road, perfect for picking up Moroccan souvenirs.

Along the beach promenade, you’ll find no shortage of shops and restaurants to explore. There’s even a McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and KFC nearby. But for us, the real stars were the small stands dotted along the way. We lost count of how many times we stopped at the churro stand—100g for just 10 MAD (around 80p) or 250g for 20 MAD (£1.60) was an offer too good to resist! Then there’s the crepe and ice cream stands, with their endless flavour options. (Fair warning: if you’re as indecisive as we are, you might find yourself standing there for a while trying to choose!)

What I’m really trying to say is this: location is the last thing you’ll need to worry about with the RIU hotels in Agadir. Everything you could possibly need is right on your doorstep—and if it’s not, it’s only a quick taxi ride away!

If you’re looking for a hotel that combines comfort, convenience, and plenty of activities for the whole family, RIU Tikida Dunas is a fantastic choice. Located right next to RIU Tikida Beach on Agadir’s long, sandy shoreline, this hotel offers everything you need for a stress-free family holiday.

Rooms: Spacious and Comfortable

The apartments at RIU Tikida Dunas are designed with families in mind. Each room comes with a balcony (perfect for enjoying the views with a morning coffee or evening wind-down), two chairs, and all the essentials: a flat-screen TV, air conditioning, heating, a mini fridge, and a safe. The bathrooms are clean and modern, though it’s worth noting that the frosted glass doors might not be to everyone’s taste. Overall, the rooms are spacious, spotless, and ideal for parents and kids.

For parents, there’s a gym and spa to help you unwind, and the poolside entertainment keeps the atmosphere fun and relaxed.

One of the welcome features for families is the dedicated kids’ club, RiuLand, where little ones can play, make new friends, and let their imaginations run wild. Teens aren’t left out either, with the Riu4U program offering activities tailored just for them. It’s a safe, supervised space that gives you a chance to enjoy some well-deserved downtime.

With 444 rooms, the hotel caters well to families. The rooms are spacious, with many featuring a king-sized bed (one of the largest you’ll find!) and a sofa bed that’s visually separated from the main sleeping area—a nice touch for families. The balconies offer fantastic views of the gardens or sea, and the bathrooms are well-equipped with walk-in showers, two sinks, and ample storage space.

That said, some guests have noted that the rooms feel a bit dated, and the amenities are on the basic side. However, with the upcoming refurbishment, these issues may soon be addressed.

Located about 15 km north of Agadir in the charming village of Taghazout, this hotel offers a more tranquil and traditional Moroccan experience compared to the bustling city centre.

Our Stay at RIU Palace Santa Maria: The Full Experience

Spoiler: It was amazing. Here’s why we think it’s the best RIU in Cape Verde.

In December 2022, our family of four stayed at the RIU Palace Santa Maria. It was nothing short of amazing! I’ll share an overview of our first-hand experience and then in the next section, we can address some of the negative TripAdvisor reviews.

1. Awarded 2024 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best

We’re not the only guests raving about RIU Palace Santa Maria. In 2024, this RIU resort was handed Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Award for the Best of the Best Hotels category. This award celebrates excellence in the travel industry and is given to the top 1% of businesses that achieve the highest volume of over and above reviews from travellers.

2. Enjoy the Convenience of Being Close To Everything

Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria is not only a stone’s throw from the beach, but also in close walking distance to Santa Maria town centre. We walked 1.9 km along the beach to the centre in around 30 minutes. Pro tip: your calves will thank you for walking on the firm sand along the shoreline (unless you’re up for the extra workout!). Alternatively, you could catch a very short taxi ride from the hotel reception.

If you’ve got young kids, you’ll likely appreciate the less than 30-minute transfer from the airport. In fact, all three of the RIU hotels in Sal are just over 18 km from Amílcar Cabral International Airport so they’re pretty equal in that respect.

RIU Palace Boavista and RIU Karamboa on Boa Vista Island are even closer to the airport. A fellow blogger walked the 1.5 km journey in just 10 minutes! However, the distance to Sal Rei puts them at a slight disadvantage. We like to walk out from our resort, and an 8 km walk into the nearest large town would be too far for the kids. 

3. Experience More Luxurious Rooms and Amenities

RIU has three hotel brands, with the RIU Palace brand offering more modern rooms and a more refined experience. The rooms at the RIU Palace Santa Maria lived up to this expectation in our experience.

Standard features include air conditioning, private bathrooms, a mini-fridge, a drinks optic with premium-brand alcohol, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

During our stay, we opted for a Grande Double Room. It comfortably accommodated our family with a double bed and a double sofa bed for the children. If, however, you have older children we’d recommend booking a family room for more space.

While most reviews praise the rooms for their modern design and comfort, some guests have mentioned worn furniture in certain rooms. In our experience, our room was well-maintained and furnished to a high standard. However, variations in room conditions can exist.

4. Six Swimming Pools, a Kid’s Pool, AND a Waterpark!

Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria has not one, not two, or even three swimming pools. In total, there are six outdoor swimming pools (including one with a swim-up bar for adults). Add to that a dedicated kid’s pool with slides (which our two loved!) and Splash Water World for over 12-year-olds.

The sheer amount of pools means you can always find sun loungers, no matter the time of day. Also, the swimming pools are heated throughout the winter which is always a plus point.

The pool views hit differently when you’re actually there!

5. Indulge In A Wide Variety of Delicious Food

The RIU Palace Santa Maria resort has a fantastic range of dining experiences. From the international buffet with live cooking stations to specialty a la carte restaurants, there are plenty of choices.

We loved the variety and quality of the food. The main buffet restaurant was our go-to spot for our evening meal. There’s also a smaller buffet restaurant closer to the beach where we ate breakfast and lunch.

If you fancy trying out the a la carte options, you can choose from Italian, Fusion, Japanese, and a Steakhouse. Some TripAdvisor reviews have mentioned limited options at the Italian restaurant. We didn’t visit that restaurant so can’t comment but if you’re aware in advance you won’t be disappointed.

To reserve a table at the specialty restaurants, you’ll need to use the RIU app. You can book your spot up to four days in advance, and we recommend doing so asap as they get snatched up quickly!

One of our favourite things to do after breakfast was to visit the Cappuccino Patisserie in the hotel reception. We enjoyed the Tia Maria coffee and the kids loved trying out all the cakes!

We found that vegetarian options were readily available throughout the resort’s restaurants. Since our visit, we discovered that one of our children has a gluten intolerance. We were pleased to find reviews mentioning the availability of gluten-free bread upon request at reception.

However, it’s worth noting that, like many all-inclusive resorts with buffet-style dining, cross-contamination can be a concern for those with coeliac disease or strict dietary restrictions. While the resort does a good job separating food stations (salads, breads, meats, etc.), it’s always wise to exercise caution and inquire about ingredients and preparation methods.

6. Have Fun with Lively Entertainment and Activities

The dedicated animation team brings an infectious energy to the resort with lively music and dancing by the pool. Reviews will tell you that’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but for us, it was a highlight of the holiday!

During the day guests can participate in beach football and volleyball games. It was great to see staff members actively engaging with guests, encouraging them to join in the fun. We even had staff members approach us by the pool, asking if we’d like to join in. While we opted to relax that day, it was clear that others were having a great time!

Entertainment continues into the evenings with live shows. RIU also hosts a themed “RIU Party” once a week at the neighboring RIU Funana Hotel. Guests at the RIU Palace Santa Maria (adults and children) can attend free of charge. It’s a great opportunity to dress up and let your hair down.

7. Relax Thanks To Babysitting and Childcare Services

The RIU Palace Santa Maria offers comprehensive childcare options to help families enjoy their holidays. The RiuLand kids’ club provides structured activities for two age groups: children aged 4-7 and 8-12 years.

RiuLand keeps children occupied through supervised activities. The resort’s animation team leads outdoor games, beach activities, and group interactions. The kids’ club typically runs throughout the day, giving you more flexibility.

The resort also offers babysitting services, allowing parents to enjoy some private time during their stay.

Our children didn’t use the kid’s club during our stay in Cape Verde. They preferred to stay with us and we’re fine with that! But if your kids are more confident it gives them the opportunity to make new friends and create memories during your holiday.

Whether you use the kids’ club or not, it’s great to have the option.

8. Feel Welcomed By Friendly and Attentive Staff

One of the things that truly sets the RIU Palace Santa Maria apart is its incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with warm smiles and a genuine willingness to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

When we arrived at the hotel, along with everyone else from the transfer bus we found ourselves in a queue for check-in. This wasn’t a problem – we were handed a glass of champagne each and juice for the kids. After a long travel day, this really helped us to relax and settle into the holiday vibes from the get-go.

As you walk around the resort, you’ll encounter staff members with a smile on their faces. Numerous RIU Palace Santa Maria Reviews on TripAdvisor mention the attentive waiters and waitresses in the restaurants. We found them to be very attentive – always ready to clear plates and offer assistance.

The complimentary poolside drinks service is also a favorite among guests. We liked the fact that we could stay hydrated through the day without leaving the sun lounger.

9. Save Time with a Digital Concierge At Your Fingertips

The RIU app provides easy access to information and services at your fingertips.

One of the app’s most convenient features is the ability to book reservations at the a la carte restaurants. You can browse menus, select your preferred time slot, and secure your table up to four days in advance. This eliminates the need to queue or worry about availability.

We were also grateful for the apps room service capabilities. Our hotel room was on the opposite side of the resort to the reception so being able to order extra pillows and drinks without leaving the room was a godsend. Just be aware, the service isn’t instant. We found that if we ordered something in the morning, it would arrive by that evening. This type of convenience adds a touch of luxury to your stay.

• Toilet facilities: We can vouch for the shortage of toilet facilities in public areas, particularly around the pool and the main restaurant. On several occasions I found myself dashing from the restaurant to the toilets in the entertainment area with one of the kids.
• Music (too little, too loud!): Some guests complained about loud music by the pool, and others about the lack of background music in the bar lounge area. For us, music wasn’t an issue. It’s impossible to please everybody on this one.
• Mosquitos, birds, and flies: Yep, you will likely get bitten by mosquitos at some point, and there are birds (little sparrows) in the outdoor eating areas. We didn’t experience the flies on the food though, which a couple of reviewers mentioned.
• Small gym with limited equipment requires booking two days in advance.
• Rooms do not have double beds as pictured online but two singles pushed together. This could be a positive as it gives you flexibility to separate them if you have older children.
• Lack of variety on the menu at the Italian restaurant.
• No lifts in the accommodation blocks make it difficult for guests with mobility issues. Also, the resort is spread out and requires a lot of walking to get between different areas.
• Entertainment is repetitive. Guests staying for two weeks reported seeing the same shows twice.
• Several guests report getting ill, possibly due to a sickness bug or food contamination. We didn’t get the sickness bug (thankfully!).

Many of the negative reviews come down to personal preference. Being aware in advance can help you decide whether these niggles come become a big issue on your holiday.

3. Take Playing to New Heights

This one’s for the kids (big and small!). Spend some time at the clifftop park, just a short downhill walk from Cap Spartel Lighthouse. We watched our kids for hours as they tested their speed and strength on the many wooden obstacles. You can buy local snacks (seeds, nuts, and lollipops), and there are plenty of picnic tables along the cliff edge. You can also pay for the kids to have a horse ride.

Just a quick warning though – if you visit on a windy day, you will feel it tenfold up there. And if you’ve got younger children, keep a close eye on them, as it’s a sheer drop down to the sea.

4. Ride on a Camel

Camel rides are especially popular with families and provide great photo opportunities. At Cap Spartel, you can pay for camel rides either on Sol Beach (near Cap Spartel Lighthouse) or on the terrace above Achakar Beach (near Hercules Cave).

If you take a camel ride on Achakar Beach, the camel will scale the steep dunes next to the steps to meet you down on the beach. Even if you don’t want to ride a camel yourself, watching them walk down from the terrace is a worthwhile experience in itself!

5. Experience THREE of the Best Tangier Beaches

Cap Spartel is home to some of the best beaches in Tangier. Three of them; Sol Beach, Ba Kacem Beach, and Achakar Beach sit right between Cap Spartel Lighthouse and Hercules Cave. Rather than hopping in a taxi to get from one spot to the other, we highly recommend slowing down and strolling along the water’s edge. The leisurely walk should take around 50 minutes, but you may decide to slow down even more and do a spot of sunbathing.

6. Lounge in the ‘Lagoon’ & Beach Club Pools

Despite what a lot of information online tells you, the ocean at Cap Spartel is not a safe place to swim! Trust us, on several occasions we saw people get caught up in rip tides. This doesn’t mean you can’t swim, though. Depending on when you visit, there are options.

In the cooler months, you can find “the lagoon” (named by our kids) at the far end of Achakar Beach. River water collects around the ruins of a 1960s hotel—you’ll see groups of local kids jumping in off the rocks. When this dries up (around the end of May), Kabana Beach Club opens to the public. For a reasonable fee, you can use their beach pool and sun loungers.

7. Journey Through Royal Grounds

Here’s our wild card. This one involves walking past Hercules Cave, so it’s not exactly between the two main tourist spots. However, we believe it’s worth including in our list of not-so-obvious things to do when visiting Cap Spartel.

Follow the coastal road – it’ll take you inland occasionally but keep veering back toward the sea and you’ll find yourself walking through the center of Salman of Saudi Arabia’s Moroccan Compound. While you can’t enter the private residence, a walk through the compound provides a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Saudi royal family.

Oh, and you’ll be rewarded at the end of the road with another beautiful Tangier beach – Sidi Kacem Beach!

Our family of four lived in Tangier, Morocco, for ten weeks between March and June 2024. We enjoyed our fair share of delicious Moroccan cuisine at several Tangier restaurants during that time.

Initially, I set out to give you our top three places to eat in Tangier, but we couldn’t quite agree. So, you’re getting a bonus—today, we’re offering not three but four Tangier restaurant reviews!

These restaurants made it to our final list as they ticked all the boxes for:

2. Varied menu (essential when you have picky eaters in tow)
3. Friendly service
4. Great price (unbelievably cheap for a family of four!)
5. Convenient location

Our Pick: The Four Best Restaurants in Tangier, Morocco

For each of the four Tangier restaurants, I have included the address (if available) and the Google Maps Plus Code. You can easily find the locations by pasting the Google Plus Code into the Google Maps search bar or clicking on the link.

Many restaurants in Tangier aren’t ideal for wheelchair or pram users as seating is often upstairs. One of our recommendations, Maison Grill Kasbah, is better than the others for people with limited mobility.

We found all these restaurants to be very affordable, especially compared to places in the UK, US, and Europe. The prices provided are the average cost per sitting for our family of four. Prices can change, so use these as ballpark figures.

I also list all the dishes we ordered from each restaurant during our visits to give you an idea of what is on offer.

1.  Café Garden Beach, Cap Spartel

A Hidden Gem Near Cape Spartel

Three out of four of these restaurants in Tangier, Morocco are situated around the ancient Medina. Not this one though.

Located just a 10-minute walk from our apartment, Cafe Garden Beach quickly became one of our go-to spots. We visited between five and ten times in total. We felt like we’d discovered a hidden gem, perfect for anyone visiting Cap Spartel during their stay in Tangier.

This restaurant offers authentic Moroccan cuisine at great prices and is a favorite among the locals. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us!

How to Find It

Set back from the main road, Cafe Garden Beach is easy to miss. As you walk down the coastal road from Cap Spartel Lighthouse toward Hercules Cave, you’ll come across a car park on the right-hand side.

Walk through the car park and you’ll find an archway next to a tourist information board. Pass through the archway and descend the steps to reach the kitchen and BBQ area.

From here, you can choose your ideal spot overlooking the ocean, and a friendly waiter will soon greet you with a menu. The seating area is terraced down the side of the cliff. We preferred to sit higher up to avoid the grill’s smoke.

Beautiful Beachside Setting

Just below the restaurant is Plage Bouhendia, a small rock and sand beach accessible via steps in front of the kitchen area. During one of our visits, we witnessed the sad sight of a washed-ashore dolphin.

Delicious Menu

The menu at Cafe Garden Beach isn’t extensive—don’t expect couscous—but it offers something for everyone, including vegetarians, meat lovers, and fish enthusiasts. My favorite was the Tajine Baysara, a hearty vegetarian soup made from fava beans. It’s more filling than it looks, and you can order larger sharing portions. The fresh fish, caught nearby, and the tagines cooked over an outdoor fire are also must-tries.

Every time we ate at this restaurant, we were provided with complimentary chili-flavored olives and plenty of bread to accompany the meal. It was always very much appreciated!

Impressive Service

One particularly impressive aspect of our experience was the waitstaff’s ability to remember orders without writing anything down. No matter how long we spent dining or how many other guests they served, they always recalled our order when it was time to pay.

(Overly) Friendly Felines

One last thing to note is the presence of street cats. They may wander under your table looking for scraps, but they quickly get the message if you shoo them away.

2. Restaurant la Réception, Ancient Medina

A Hidden Gem in the Medina

We were determined to visit this restaurant in Tangier during one of our trips to the ancient Medina. In all honesty, the raving reviews on Google led us here. We were also excited about the panoramic rooftop view—and trust us, it didn’t disappoint.

Finding the Location

The location of this restaurant isn’t entirely obvious. We walked past it twice before spotting the sign next to an open doorway.

You will need to walk up five levels to reach the rooftop terrace. Don’t make the mistake we did, though. The kitchen is on the second floor (you’ll pass it on the stairwell). Pop your head in and let them know you want to eat, and they’ll follow you up with a menu. We didn’t do this and ended up going all the way back downstairs.

Vegan-Friendly Options

This is one of the few restaurants in Tangier that offers vegan options. While I’m not a vegan, I do enjoy plant-based foods, so I took the opportunity to try it out for our vegan readers. I was torn between a vegan burger and a vegan tagine, but being in Morocco, the tagine won me over. The falafel balls cooked in tomato and onion sauce were so tasty and got my approval. I would order that dish again and highly recommend it to all our vegan and vegetarian readers.

Complimentary olives were also provided to tide us over while we waited for our meals.

Must-Try Dish: Chicken Pastilla

Another must-try food here, if you’re not on a plant-based diet, is the chicken pastilla. In this traditional Moroccan dish, a savory chicken filling is wrapped in delicate filo pastry and dusted with sugar. The sweet and savory tastes work well together—we’ve not found anything else like it outside Morocco.

3. Maison Grill Kasbah, Ancient Medina

Convenient Location and Accessible Seating

We visited this restaurant twice during our ten-week stay in Tangier, and we’ll definitely be back! Located not far from Grand Socco, you’ll need to walk uphill until you see the restaurant on your right. There is seating upstairs and downstairs (we tested both!) and outdoor seating across the road, which is great if you have limited mobility.

Multilingual Menus and Friendly Service

There are many plus points for this restaurant. They provide their menu in different languages, including English, Spanish, and French. The waiters were incredibly helpful and put us to shame with their multilingual abilities. They were happy to chat and recommend different dish combinations we wouldn’t have otherwise tried.

We were given a little dish of cooked lentils and some olives to eat while we waited for our meal. They went down very well with the hungry kids!

A Memorable Encounter with the Chef

On our second visit, we had the pleasure of meeting the chef—a lovely lady from Rabat. (If anyone knows her name, please let me know in the comments as I want to give her the credit she deserves.) The food was seriously delicious! The couscous is to die for, and the portions are huge.

You really must try some of the sides, including the caramelized pumpkin with honey, cabbage with grapes, and baqoula. Our favorite drink was the mint and red fruit smoothie.

4. Restaurant Al Maimouni, Ancient Medina

Convenient Location Near the Port

Out of the four restaurants in Tangier, Morocco, this one is closest to the port—handy if you’re coming over for the day from Spain. However, this is not a good choice for people with limited mobility. This restaurant has the narrowest and steepest staircase I think I’ve climbed, but it’s well worth it once you reach the top.

Finding the Entrance

Follow Google Maps directions. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see steps leading up the old wall behind a public toilet block. Restaurant Al Maimouni is just opposite the steps. The kitchen is on the ground floor, and the steps up to the rooftop can be seen to your right when you go inside.

Rooftop Dining with a View

Restaurant Al Maimouni offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We chose to sit at one of the six tables on the roof terrace to enjoy unspoiled views of the port and ancient Medina. The sink on the rooftop was a nice touch for washing hands before and after the meal. Sometimes it’s the small things that are most appreciated, hey?

Delicious Food and Thoughtful Extras

The food here was very tasty, and the portion sizes were just right. The kids were particularly enamored with the lemon tart for dessert. As with other restaurants we visited in Tangier, we were given olives and bread on the house while we waited for our meal. We were also very thankful for the complimentary glass of mint tea after our meal and Moroccan sweets for the children to take away.
