Is Agadir a Good Family Vacation Destination?
With its year-round sunshine and breathtaking coastline, it’s easy to see why Agadir is such a hit with families. Our family of four has spent a total of six months living in Agadir during the winter months, and honestly, we just can’t get enough of this place—it’s one of those destinations we keep coming back to.
Located not far from the Canary Islands (a classic winter escape), Agadir offers the same glorious warmth but, in our opinion, something even better: a richer, more vibrant cultural experience. Whether you’re exploring the bustling local markets, sampling authentic Moroccan cuisine, or simply soaking up the sun on the golden beaches, Agadir has a way of creating family memories that last a lifetime.
When it comes to family-friendly accommodation in Agadir, the internationally recognized RIU chain has a couple of fantastic options from their classic and luxury lines. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what they offer and help you decide if they’re the right fit for your family.

Comparing Classic and Luxury RIU Lines
The Classic RIU line provides simplicity and value for money. In Agadir, RIU Tikida Dunas is a classic family-friendly option, with spacious rooms and a kids’ club for keeping the little ones entertained. On the other hand, RIU Tikida Beach is strictly adults-only. So, if you’re a parent in desperate need of a kid-free escape, this could be your ideal spot!
The Luxury RIU line takes things up a notch. Represented by RIU Palace Tikida Agadir and RIU Palace Tikida Taghazout, these hotels offer a touch of indulgence to your family holiday. This includes refined architecture, themed dining options, and premium brand alcohol in your room.
Handy Tip: If you’re staying at one of the Riu Palace hotels, you’re welcome to dine and use the facilities at the neighboring Riu Classic hotels. But, it’s worth noting that the reverse isn’t true—guests staying at the Classic hotels can’t access the Palace hotels. Just something to keep in mind when planning your stay!
During our stay in Agadir over the winter of 2024, RIU Palace Tikida Agadir was closed for renovations. Every time we walked past, the builders were hard at work, and from what we’ve heard, the upgrades are going to be worth the wait. The renovations include:
- A redesigned lobby and reception area
- Modernised hotel rooms and bathrooms
- New interiors for the main buffet, Moroccan restaurant, and cocktail lounge
- The addition of a second swimming pool
- New exercise equipment in the gym
The hotel is set to reopen on February 20th, 2025, so if you’re after a modern, freshly refurbished stay, this one could be a fantastic choice.
No matter which RIU hotel you choose, we love that you can count on the brand’s signature consistency and high-quality experience. This always puts our mind at ease when splashing the cash on an all-inclusive family holiday.

Why Families Choose RIU Hotels in Agadir
Beach and City Promenade Access
All the RIU hotels in Agadir (except for RIU Palace Tikida Taghazout) are close to each other along the Agadir Beach promenade. Their beachfront location is a huge draw for families—because who doesn’t want to be steps away from the sand and sea?
When it comes to exploring beyond the hotel, the RIU properties are about 3.4 km from Souk El Had, Morocco’s largest souk. On foot, this took us around 45 minutes, though with two curious kids in tow (and plenty of stops to inspect every interesting sight along the way!), it felt shorter. If you’re after something closer, there’s also a small local souk just across the road, perfect for picking up Moroccan souvenirs.
Along the beach promenade, you’ll find no shortage of shops and restaurants to explore. There’s even a McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and KFC nearby. But for us, the real stars were the small stands dotted along the way. We lost count of how many times we stopped at the churro stand—100g for just 10 MAD (around 80p) or 250g for 20 MAD (£1.60) was an offer too good to resist! Then there’s the crepe and ice cream stands, with their endless flavour options. (Fair warning: if you’re as indecisive as we are, you might find yourself standing there for a while trying to choose!)
What I’m really trying to say is this: location is the last thing you’ll need to worry about with the RIU hotels in Agadir. Everything you could possibly need is right on your doorstep—and if it’s not, it’s only a quick taxi ride away!

As the only family-friendly RIU hotel in Agadir from the Classic line, RIU Tikida Dunas offers exceptional value for money. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option without compromising on quality or amenities, this hotel delivers. RIU Palace Tikida Agadir: A Family-Friendly Stay with Room for Improvement
RIU Palace Tikida Agadir is a five-star Platinum hotel located right on the doorstep of Agadir’s beach and promenade, making it a convenient choice for families. Built in 2012 and set to undergo a major refurbishment in 2025, this hotel has the potential to be a great option for families—though it’s worth noting that some recent reviews on TripAdvisor have been mixed. It will be interesting to see how the renovations improve the guest experience.
First Impressions: Spacious and Welcoming
The hotel’s sizable lobby is impressive, with plenty of balcony and lounge areas to relax in. The reception area is inviting, and the staff are known for being extremely friendly and helpful. On arrival, many guests are struck by the hotel’s grand design and the warm welcome they receive.
Rooms: Spacious but Dated
With 444 rooms, the hotel caters well to families. The rooms are spacious, with many featuring a king-sized bed (one of the largest you’ll find!) and a sofa bed that’s visually separated from the main sleeping area—a nice touch for families. The balconies offer fantastic views of the gardens or sea, and the bathrooms are well-equipped with walk-in showers, two sinks, and ample storage space.
That said, some guests have noted that the rooms feel a bit dated, and the amenities are on the basic side. However, with the upcoming refurbishment, these issues may soon be addressed.
Dining: Plenty of Choice, but Room for Improvement
The hotel’s all-inclusive dining offers a wide variety of options, from international dishes to local Moroccan specialities. There are live cooking stations in the main buffet restaurant, as well as two themed à la carte restaurants: Fusion and Moroccan, both of which receive positive reviews.
However, some families have noted that the kids’ food corner is lacking, and highchairs are limited and more suited to babies than toddlers. The drinks are all-inclusive, with the hotel serving Special Flag lager from a French microbrewery, as well as a range of cocktails and non-alcoholic options.
Activities and Facilities: Fun for All Ages
- Pools: The hotel boasts four swimming pools, including a dedicated kids’ pool. The main pool area is large, with plenty of sun loungers and swim-up bars.
- Beach: The hotel has a private beach area, that is separated from the hotel by a small promenade, making it easily accessible.
- Kids’ Club: The RiuLand kids’ club is a hit with younger guests, offering a safe space for children to play and make new friends.
- Entertainment: The hotel offers a good activity program, including fitness classes and evening shows. The entertainment bar hosts cabaret acts, DJs, and magicians, ensuring there’s always something to keep the family entertained.
- Spa and Gym: For parents, there’s a spa offering treatments and a small gym with basic equipment.
What Parents Will Love
- Spacious rooms with balconies and sofa beds, ideal for families
- All-inclusive dining with a variety of options, including themed restaurants
- Dedicated kids’ pool and RiuLand kids’ club to keep little ones entertained
- Friendly staff who go out of their way to make your stay comfortable
- Excellent location right on the beach and promenade
Things to Consider
- Some guests have reported inconsistent service in the bars and restaurants, with long wait times and a perceived two-tier system favouring French guests.
- The rooms and amenities feel dated in places, though this may improve after the 2025 refurbishment.
- Highchairs and kids’ food options are limited, which may be a drawback for families with young children.
Guest Reviews: A Mixed Picture
While many families have enjoyed their stay at RIU Palace Tikida Agadir, praising the spacious rooms, friendly staff, and convenient location, others have noted areas for improvement. Some guests have described the hotel as feeling more like a 3-star property than a 5-star one, citing issues with food quality, service delays, and dated facilities.
The upcoming 2025 refurbishment could address many of these concerns, so it will be interesting to see how the hotel evolves in the coming years.
