What Clothes to Pack for Cape Verde with Kids

Cape Verde’s weather really is great for most of the year. It’s warm and dry, so unless you’re travelling during the rainy season, you won’t need to worry too much about packing for rain or sudden cold snaps.

We visited in December and, to be honest, most of our days were spent bouncing between the beach and the pool. We barely wore anything other than swimwear, sun hats, and a few lightweight cover-ups you could just throw on. It made getting out the door super easy.

Choose Breathable Fabrics

Fabrics really matter when it comes to comfort in the heat. Natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, and merino wool are the best choices as they’re breathable, help regulate body temperature, and dry quickly (great when little ones insist on one more swim before dinner).

Daywear Essentials

• Lightweight cotton t-shirts, shorts, sundresses
• UV-protective swimwear and rash vests (especially for younger kids)
• Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses
• Light cover-ups for throwing on over swimsuits
• Flip-flops or sandals for the beach
• Trainers or sturdy shoes for walking or outdoor activities

Evening Outfits: Casual, but Smart

For most family-friendly restaurants, smart casual is perfectly fine. You won’t need anything overly formal.

• Maxi dresses, cotton trousers, skirts, or jumpsuits
• Short-sleeve shirts, polo shirts, or light linen tops for men
• Comfortable sandals or barefoot-style shoes that can dress up or down

If you’ve booked a gourmet or à la carte restaurant at your resort, double-check the dress code. Many require men to wear:

• Long trousers (not shorts)
• A collared or long-sleeve shirt
• Closed-toe shoes

Tip: Even in warmer months, evenings can get breezy—especially from November to March—so it’s worth packing a jumper, hoodie, or light jacket for each family member.

Footwear for Everyday Walking

Footwear is part of what you’ll be wearing every day, so it’s worth thinking about it alongside your clothes rather than as a separate gear item. In hot destinations like Cape Verde, the right shoes make a noticeable difference to how comfortable and mobile your days feel. Here’s what we recommend:

For day-to-day wear, we keep footwear simple and breathable. For walking around towns, excursions, and longer days on our feet, we pack one lightweight closed-toe barefoot shoe per person. For us, the Vivobarefoot Primus Lite 3.5 has worked particularly well in hot climates; it’s breathable, packs down easily, and holds up well for travel days and everyday exploring with kids.

Beach & Pool Essentials for Families

Cape Verde’s beaches are to die for. Many are kid-friendly and great for paddling, but it’s worth knowing that you’re still on the Atlantic Ocean here, and conditions can vary quite a bit depending on the season.

If you’re visiting during the windier months (usually between November and March), the waves can get surprisingly strong. It’s definitely not the calm, still sea you’d find in the Med. In some spots, swimming might be off-limits altogether.

That said, there’s no reason why you can’t still enjoy the beach with little ones, as long as you come prepared.

Keep Your Cool (Literally)

Shade is almost non-existent on most Cape Verde beaches, especially if you’re not at a hotel with loungers and umbrellas. If you’re traveling with younger kids or babies, you’ll want to create your own shady space.

We really recommend packing a lightweight pop-up tent or sun shelter. Something quick to set up and easy to pack down that will provide your little ones a place to nap, snack, or just take a break from the heat.

Pack These Beach Day Essentials

• A beach bag or tote with compartments (wet vs dry storage is key)
• Large towel or a sand-resistant beach blanket
• Waterproof pouch for phones, passports, or room key cards
• Floatation gear like armbands or a swim vest for kids who aren’t confident swimmers
• Goggles for splashy pool time or calm sea days
• Toys that don’t take up much space: we brought a collapsible bucket and spade, a frisbee, and a couple of beach balls. Simple stuff, but it made a huge difference.
• Reusable water bottles or spill-proof cups to keep everyone hydrated
• A few extra snacks (we were often a fair walk from beach bars or shops)

It’s worth bringing your own if you can fit them in your luggage. Many shops near the beach don’t stock much, or they’ll charge a premium for basic toys.

Toiletries & First Aid: What You Actually Need

You can buy the basics in Cape Verde, but unless you want to spend part of your holiday searching for teething gel or paying triple for kids’ sunscreen, it’s worth packing what you need ahead of time.

Sun, Bugs & Ocean Life

Mosquitos were definitely around when we visited in December, especially in the evenings. We’d highly recommend bringing mosquito spray, even if you’re staying at a resort. If you’re travelling with little ones, you might prefer a DEET-free insect repellent (we’ve tried citronella-based sprays and had decent results), but either way, don’t skip it.

We also like to use reef-safe sunscreen. It’s good for the environment and kinder on sensitive skin. One of our favourites even claims to offer jellyfish sting protection, which is a nice extra given that Portuguese Man O’ War jellyfish can sometimes be spotted in Cape Verde’s waters. (None of us got stung, thankfully, but we were glad to have it just in case.)

Tip: Even if your resort has a shop, stock can be limited, and you might be far from the nearest pharmacy if you need something in a hurry.

The Funny Tummy Kit

One of the most common complaints travellers have—not just in Cape Verde—is an unsettled stomach. Maybe it’s the change in water, or just trying unfamiliar food, but tummy trouble can really derail a day.

We always bring:

• Anti-diarrhoeal medication
• Oral rehydration sachets
• Kids’ probiotics (if you’re into that kind of prep)
• Plenty of age-appropriate pain relief (like Calpol, Nurofen, or paracetamol/ibuprofen for adults and kids)

Having these on hand just means you don’t have to worry about tracking down a pharmacy if someone’s not feeling 100%.

Our Toiletry & First Aid Essentials

Here’s what we pack for every family trip, and we used during our Cape Verde holiday:

• High SPF sunscreen (reef-safe and water-resistant)
• After-sun lotion or aloe vera gel
• Mosquito repellent (plus bite/sting cream)
• Basic first aid kit: plasters, antiseptic wipes, thermometer
• Kids’ and adults’ pain relief (paracetamol/ibuprofen)
• Motion sickness remedies (especially useful if you’re planning inter-island boat trips)
• Anti-diarrhoeal tablets and rehydration sachets
• Toothbrushes and toothpaste (familiar brands if your kids are picky)
• Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes
• Baby wipes and tissues (we always go through more than expected)
• Nail clippers, combs, and a handful of spare hair ties
• Nappies or pull-ups for babies and toddlers and a travel changing mat

Feeding & Snacks for Cape Verde with Kids

Food-wise, you’ll be glad to hear that most Cape Verdean resorts cater really well to families. You’ll usually find a mix of international dishes, including pasta, grilled chicken, fruit, chips, and simple buffet options. Even the fussiest eaters should find something they’ll eat.

It’s still worth packing a few familiar snacks from home though, especially for:

• Airport waits
• Day trips where food options might be limited
• Those “I’m starving!” moments mid-afternoon when you’re not quite ready to leave the beach

Easy Snacks to Bring

• Crackers, cereal bars, dried fruit (gluten-free if required)
• Reusable snack containers or pouches
• Spill-proof bowls and bibs for toddlers
• Sippy cups or toddler water bottles

Feeding Gear for Babies and Toddlers:

If you’re travelling with a baby or toddler, or you’re breastfeeding, these extras can make life a lot easier:

• Clip-on booster seat or portable high chair – really helpful if your hotel doesn’t provide one
• Baby formula, bottles, sterilising wipes or tablets (pack extras just in case)
• Baby food pouches or jars (great for travel days and restaurant backups)
• Cooler bag for milk, snacks, or anything perishable
• Travel breast pump kit – if you’re pumping on the go, look for compact, battery-powered options. Also, don’t forget to bring a compatible storage bag and freezer packs

Sleep & Comfort Essentials

We all know how much smoother a trip goes when everyone gets a good night’s sleep. New environments, different routines, and the excitement of being somewhere new can make sleep a bit unpredictable on holiday, especially for babies and toddlers.

We’ve found that bringing along a few comforts from home makes all the difference. Even one familiar blanket or a favourite teddy can help settle them in and make an unfamiliar room feel safe.

What to Pack

• A lightweight travel cot (some hotels provide them, so check ahead—you might not need to bring your own)
• An inflatable toddler mattress with bumpers (great if you’re in a hotel room with no extra bed)
• Muslin cloths, a soft blanket, or a sleep sack, depending on your child’s age and how warm the room is
• Their favourite cuddly toy or comforter (don’t forget this—trust us!)
• A white noise machine or white noise app – brilliant for light sleepers, especially if your accommodation is near a pool or entertainment area
• A small nightlight – helpful for middle-of-the-night wakeups in unfamiliar surroundings

A Quick Packing Hack

Travelling with kids means bulkier luggage, especially if they have to sleep with that one giant stuffed giraffe. We honestly couldn’t manage without our Ecohub Compression Packing Cubes. They let us pack the soft toys and still have space for the essentials (like clothes… and snacks).

Travel Gear That Makes Island Life Easier

You don’t need to pack the kitchen sink, but having a few clever bits of gear can make all the difference when trying to avert sweaty meltdowns (for you and the kids). Here are a few things you may find genuinely useful:

Our Must-Have Travel Gear:

• Foldable stroller – Ideal for the airport, naps on the go, or just getting around larger resorts. Look for one that’s lightweight and can handle a bit of sand or cobblestone.
• Baby carrier or breathable sling – If you’re hitting the beach or exploring towns where pushing a buggy just isn’t practical, this will save your back and your sanity.
• Car seat – If you’re hiring a car or planning taxi rides, it’s safest (and often easier) to bring your own. Some car rental companies offer them, but availability and condition can be hit or miss.
• Backpack-style day bag – Hands-free is key when you’ve got kids. We also recommend bringing a toddler harness, ID bracelet, or GPS watch for busy markets or excursions for extra peace of mind.
• Apple AirTags or other GPS trackers – Handy for keeping tabs on checked luggage, carry-ons, or even clipped to a toddler’s backpack. We have one in every bag.
• European plug adapters – Cape Verde uses the standard European two-pin plug. Bring a couple if you’ve got devices for everyone (phones, tablets, white noise machines…).
• Beach wagon (optional) – Not essential, but great if you’re staying somewhere with a longer walk to the beach and have multiple kids (and buckets, towels, snacks).

Activities & Entertainment: Keep Them Busy

Even on the most exciting holiday, travel days tend to feel long. Having a few go-to activities ready can make all the difference, whether you’re waiting at the airport, on the flight (about 6 hours from the UK), or just filling some quiet downtime at the hotel.

What We Packed

• Books, colouring supplies, and sticker books – Light and easy to pull out at restaurants or on the plane.
• Tablet with downloaded shows or movies – Absolute lifesaver for flights and lazy post-beach evenings. Don’t forget the headphones (the kid-sized, volume-limited kind are ideal).
• Kindle Paperwhite Kids – Lightweight, glare-free in bright sun, and lets kids read for hours without screen time guilt, or the need to pack a pile of books.
• Compact games or puzzles – Magnetic travel games, mini memory cards, or anything that won’t vanish under a plane seat. Some of our favourites for older kids are Monopoly Deal and Sussed.
• A small toy or soft doll – One familiar favourite goes a long way when they’re tired or overwhelmed.
• Camera or binoculars – For older kids, this turned out to be a hit, especially when we went dolphin watching or on nature walks.

Over 70% of RIU’s establishments now offer all-inclusive services – one of the many reasons loyal customers keep coming back. RIU guests know that they can expect consistently high standards no matter which of the chain’s hotels they choose to stay at.

RIU’s strong reputation was certainly one of the reasons we stayed at Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria in Cape Verde.

Our Stay at RIU Palace Santa Maria: The Full Experience

Spoiler: It was amazing. Here’s why we think it’s the best RIU in Cape Verde.

In December 2022, our family of four stayed at the RIU Palace Santa Maria. It was nothing short of amazing! I’ll share an overview of our first-hand experience and then in the next section, we can address some of the negative TripAdvisor reviews.

1. Awarded 2024 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best

We’re not the only guests raving about RIU Palace Santa Maria. In 2024, this RIU resort was handed Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Award for the Best of the Best Hotels category. This award celebrates excellence in the travel industry and is given to the top 1% of businesses that achieve the highest volume of over and above reviews from travellers.

2. Enjoy the Convenience of Being Close To Everything

Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria is not only a stone’s throw from the beach, but also in close walking distance to Santa Maria town centre. We walked 1.9 km along the beach to the centre in around 30 minutes. Pro tip: your calves will thank you for walking on the firm sand along the shoreline (unless you’re up for the extra workout!). Alternatively, you could catch a very short taxi ride from the hotel reception.

If you’ve got young kids, you’ll likely appreciate the less than 30-minute transfer from the airport. In fact, all three of the RIU hotels in Sal are just over 18 km from Amílcar Cabral International Airport so they’re pretty equal in that respect.

RIU Palace Boavista and RIU Karamboa on Boa Vista Island are even closer to the airport. A fellow blogger walked the 1.5 km journey in just 10 minutes! However, the distance to Sal Rei puts them at a slight disadvantage. We like to walk out from our resort, and an 8 km walk into the nearest large town would be too far for the kids. 

3. Experience More Luxurious Rooms and Amenities

RIU has three hotel brands, with the RIU Palace brand offering more modern rooms and a more refined experience. The rooms at the RIU Palace Santa Maria lived up to this expectation in our experience.

Standard features include air conditioning, private bathrooms, a mini-fridge, a drinks optic with premium-brand alcohol, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

During our stay, we opted for a Grande Double Room. It comfortably accommodated our family with a double bed and a double sofa bed for the children. If, however, you have older children we’d recommend booking a family room for more space.

While most reviews praise the rooms for their modern design and comfort, some guests have mentioned worn furniture in certain rooms. In our experience, our room was well-maintained and furnished to a high standard. However, variations in room conditions can exist.

4. Six Swimming Pools, a Kid’s Pool, AND a Waterpark!

Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria has not one, not two, or even three swimming pools. In total, there are six outdoor swimming pools (including one with a swim-up bar for adults). Add to that a dedicated kid’s pool with slides (which our two loved!) and Splash Water World for over 12-year-olds.

The sheer amount of pools means you can always find sun loungers, no matter the time of day. Also, the swimming pools are heated throughout the winter which is always a plus point.

5. Indulge In A Wide Variety of Delicious Food

The RIU Palace Santa Maria resort has a fantastic range of dining experiences. From the international buffet with live cooking stations to specialty a la carte restaurants, there are plenty of choices.

We loved the variety and quality of the food. The main buffet restaurant was our go-to spot for our evening meal. There’s also a smaller buffet restaurant closer to the beach where we ate breakfast and lunch.

If you fancy trying out the a la carte options, you can choose from Italian, Fusion, Japanese, and a Steakhouse. Some TripAdvisor reviews have mentioned limited options at the Italian restaurant. We didn’t visit that restaurant so can’t comment but if you’re aware in advance you won’t be disappointed.

To reserve a table at the specialty restaurants, you’ll need to use the RIU app. You can book your spot up to four days in advance, and we recommend doing so asap as they get snatched up quickly!

One of our favourite things to do after breakfast was to visit the Cappuccino Patisserie in the hotel reception. We enjoyed the Tia Maria coffee and the kids loved trying out all the cakes!

We found that vegetarian options were readily available throughout the resort’s restaurants. Since our visit, we discovered that one of our children has a gluten intolerance. We were pleased to find reviews mentioning the availability of gluten-free bread upon request at reception.

However, it’s worth noting that, like many all-inclusive resorts with buffet-style dining, cross-contamination can be a concern for those with coeliac disease or strict dietary restrictions. While the resort does a good job separating food stations (salads, breads, meats, etc.), it’s always wise to exercise caution and inquire about ingredients and preparation methods.

6. Have Fun with Lively Entertainment and Activities

The dedicated animation team brings an infectious energy to the resort with lively music and dancing by the pool. Reviews will tell you that’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but for us, it was a highlight of the holiday!

During the day guests can participate in beach football and volleyball games. It was great to see staff members actively engaging with guests, encouraging them to join in the fun. We even had staff members approach us by the pool, asking if we’d like to join in. While we opted to relax that day, it was clear that others were having a great time!

Entertainment continues into the evenings with live shows. RIU also hosts a themed “RIU Party” once a week at the neighboring RIU Funana Hotel. Guests at the RIU Palace Santa Maria (adults and children) can attend free of charge. It’s a great opportunity to dress up and let your hair down.

7. Relax Thanks To Babysitting and Childcare Services

The RIU Palace Santa Maria offers comprehensive childcare options to help families enjoy their holidays. The RiuLand kids’ club provides structured activities for two age groups: children aged 4-7 and 8-12 years.

RiuLand keeps children occupied through supervised activities. The resort’s animation team leads outdoor games, beach activities, and group interactions. The kids’ club typically runs throughout the day, giving you more flexibility.

The resort also offers babysitting services, allowing parents to enjoy some private time during their stay.

Our children didn’t use the kid’s club during our stay in Cape Verde. They preferred to stay with us and we’re fine with that! But if your kids are more confident it gives them the opportunity to make new friends and create memories during your holiday.

Whether you use the kids’ club or not, it’s great to have the option.

8. Feel Welcomed By Friendly and Attentive Staff

When we arrived at the hotel, along with everyone else from the transfer bus we found ourselves in a queue for check-in. This wasn’t a problem – we were handed a glass of champagne each and juice for the kids. After a long travel day, this really helped us to relax and settle into the holiday vibes from the get-go.

We were also grateful for the apps room service capabilities. Our hotel room was on the opposite side of the resort to the reception so being able to order extra pillows and drinks without leaving the room was a godsend. Just be aware, the service isn’t instant. We found that if we ordered something in the morning, it would arrive by that evening. This type of convenience adds a touch of luxury to your stay.

Addressing the Negative Reviews

There will ALWAYS be negative reviews. It’s impossible to please everyone. I’ve read hundreds of TripAdvisor reviews, including the one, two, and three-stars to get an idea of what guests didn’t like. Let’s address these issues so you can decide whether they’re a deal-breaker for you.

• Toilet facilities: We can vouch for the shortage of toilet facilities in public areas, particularly around the pool and the main restaurant. On several occasions I found myself dashing from the restaurant to the toilets in the entertainment area with one of the kids.
• Music (too little, too loud!): Some guests complained about loud music by the pool, and others about the lack of background music in the bar lounge area. For us, music wasn’t an issue. It’s impossible to please everybody on this one.
• Mosquitos, birds, and flies: Yep, you will likely get bitten by mosquitos at some point, and there are birds (little sparrows) in the outdoor eating areas. We didn’t experience the flies on the food though, which a couple of reviewers mentioned.
• Small gym with limited equipment requires booking two days in advance.
• Rooms do not have double beds as pictured online but two singles pushed together. This could be a positive as it gives you flexibility to separate them if you have older children.
• Lack of variety on the menu at the Italian restaurant.
• No lifts in the accommodation blocks make it difficult for guests with mobility issues. Also, the resort is spread out and requires a lot of walking to get between different areas.
• Entertainment is repetitive. Guests staying for two weeks reported seeing the same shows twice.
• Several guests report getting ill, possibly due to a sickness bug or food contamination. We didn’t get the sickness bug (thankfully!).

Many of the negative reviews come down to personal preference. Being aware in advance can help you decide whether these niggles come become a big issue on your holiday.

It was such a hit that we’re already planning to go back, this time for longer. But like with any family holiday, a little prep goes a long way.

Why Cape Verde is the Perfect Holiday Destination for Families

Cape Verde isn’t just palm trees and pretty beaches (though there are plenty of those). It’s hard to beat the year-round warm weather, the welcoming people, and the lack of pressure to do anything except enjoy your time together as a family.

Across the islands, you’ll find a unique blend of West African, Portuguese, and Brazilian cultures, reflected in the food, dance, and art. The locals are known for their Morabeza (hospitality), and many will go out of their way to make your family feel at home. • The UV is intense: Even on overcast days, it’s easy to burn.
• The ocean breeze is deceptive: It keeps you cool but doesn’t block UV rays.
• Sunburn ruins the fun: Peeling skin + salty water = cranky kids (and adults).

How to stay safe in the Cape Verde sun

• Pack a high-factor, reef-safe, water-resistant sunscreen (SPF 50+ is best)
• Reapply regularly, especially after swimming
• Wear hats and sunglasses to protect delicate skin and eyes
• Stay in the shade during peak hours (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.): Perfect time for lunch, naps, or board games indoors.
• Take a lightweight beach tent if you have room in your suitcase, as there is very little natural shade on the beach.

If you’ve ever had that stomach-drop moment when a child disappears from view, you understand the panic. Another great option is Bluetooth trackers like the Tile Pro or Apple AirTag. They can be attached to a keychain, wristband, or shoelace and zipped into their pocket.

Water safety is crucial
With pools, waves, and splash zones everywhere, water is part of the experience, but it can also be a risk. Cape Verde’s beaches are stunning, but most have strong undercurrents. Even confident swimmers need to be cautious.

Sal: Small and Full of Life

Sal is a smaller island, which makes it ideal for families. Most resorts and hotels are clustered around Santa Maria Beach, and you can walk into Santa Maria town in 10–15 minutes.

We chose Sal for our first trip, and were so grateful to have shops, restaurants, local markets, and excursions all close by.

Sal is a great choice if you want a mix of lazy beach days, a bit of exploring, and eating out without spending much of your precious holiday time cooped up in a car.

Boa Vista: Bigger, Quieter, and Slower-Paced

Boa Vista has a quieter, more remote feel than Sal. It’s a bigger island, with resorts and attractions more spread out, so you’ll often need to travel a bit further to get around.

It’s a great option if you’re planning to mostly stay at your resort, relax, and soak up the sun. There’s still plenty to see and do if you’re up for an outing, but expect longer travel times compared to Sal.

Boa Vista is a good choice if your family’s looking to slow down, switch off, and just enjoy some quiet.

Let’s be clear: EHIC/GHIC cards don’t apply in Cape Verde. You’ll need comprehensive travel insurance that covers:

• Medical expenses
• Emergency repatriation
• Pre-existing conditions (if applicable)

Why it matters: Kids get sick, accidents happen, and the last thing you want is to be caught unprepared.

True story: My daughter had a surprise asthma attack in Menorca. Thanks to our GHIC card and solid insurance, we were covered for the ambulance, treatment, and a three-night hospital stay.

Recommendation:
Compare family travel insurance plans to find the right fit. Look for coverage that includes 24/7 emergency support, child-specific care, and medical evacuation.

This was my first question after setting my heart on visiting those islands off the West African Coast. And I’m guessing you’re wondering the same thing?

We visited Cape Verde as a family in December 2022. But before I booked the holiday, I wanted to be sure of our options. This would be our two kiddo’s first time on an airplane, and I wanted it to be a stress-free experience for them (and us).

Where Is Cape Verde?

The Republic of Cabo Verde is nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, 570 km off Senegal on the northwest coast of Africa.

The Cape Verde archipelago, also known as Cabo Verde, is made up of 10 volcanic islands. From the lunar-like landscapes of Fogo to the golden beaches of Sal, each island has its own unique character and allure.

The geography of these islands has made for a tragic history that includes colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and struggles for independence. These tragedies of the past have shaped a unique and rich cultural identity in Cape Verde – a blend of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences is evident throughout Cape Verdean cuisine, music, and dance.

Amidst the comforts of all-inclusive resorts, it’s easy to overlook the Cape Verdean culture and history. But it’s the resilience, survival, and enduring spirit of the Cape Verdean people that truly define this remarkable destination.

If you’re interested in experiencing these beautiful islands for yourself, you can get there quite easily from the United Kingdom. Cape Verde is approx. 5000 km southwest of the UK (about 1000 km further south than the Canary Islands) and it can be reached by air in under 6 hours.

The most obvious way to reach Cape Verde is by air, but it’s not the only way. I’ll talk about another option that most people don’t consider later in this blog post.

Four international airports serve the ten Cabo Verde Islands. They are:

• Amílcar Cabral International Airport in Sal
• Aristides Pereira International Airport in Boa Vista
• Nelson Mandela International Airport (AKA Praia International Airport) in Santiago
• Cesária Évora Airport in Sao Vicente

The most popular Cape Verde islands for holidaymakers are Sal and Boa Vista so, it’s no surprise that the only direct flights from the UK to Cape Verde go to those two islands. To reach any of the other islands in Cape Verde, you’ll need to take an indirect route.

It was for this reason that we decided on Sal Island for our family holiday. With two kids in tow we wanted a hassle-free journey. Especially for their first flight.

Who Flies to Cape Verde from the UK?

Currently, TUI is the only airline that provides direct flights to Cape Verde from the UK. They fly from Birmingham, Bristol, London Gatwick, and Manchester to Boa Vista. And from Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, London Gatwick, Glasgow, Manchester, and Newcastle to Sal. Please see the tables below for the days that TUI operates from each airport.

To gather the data, I scoured the TUI website, analyzing the average cost of every holiday package available for the selected resorts. Not stopping there, I also documented both the lowest and highest prices for each month. The culmination of these figures is presented on the two graphs below.

My focus? The RIU Palace resorts in both Santa Maria (Sal Island) and Boa Vista. By choosing resorts on different islands, I set out to determine whether the price fluctuations were dependent on the island. Spoiler alert! The trends were surprisingly parallel.

My search was the same for both resorts: A 7-day all-inclusive trip for a family of four to the RIU Palace resorts, staying in a large double room (sleeps up to 4) with a balcony.

On average, January, May, September, and November are the most wallet-friendly months to visit Cape Verde. In contrast, the prices increase at Christmas, Easter, and during the school holidays (no surprises there).

Bargain hunters, take note! There were some great deals to be had in early July and early December.

For those with the freedom to travel outside school schedules, you may wish to start your quest with these cheaper months.

However, if you’re tethered to school holidays, fear not! Here are some tried-and-true tips for snagging a better deal:

Looking at the tables above, you’ll notice Sal and Boa Vista islands have their own weather quirks – different temperatures, humidity, rainfall, and windspeeds. However, they do follow the same weather trends throughout the year.

The hottest days tend to show up in August, September, October, and November. But so does the rainy season, with the most rain falling in August, September, and October. Talk about timing!

The windy season takes the spotlight from December to June. And humidity levels are typically lower following the rainy season (from November to February).

So, if you’re looking to dodge the wind and rain, July or November would be the best months to visit Cape Verde.

When we visited Cape Verde in December 2022, every day was a comfy 26°C. There was no rain. Just a strong breeze on the beach that I’d call more of a friendly strong hug than an uncomfortable gust. From experience, I’d also recommend early December for decent Cape Verde weather.

So, we now know the very best times to visit Cape Verde both in and out of term time. But does that mean we should visit Cape Verde at other times of the year? Absolutely not! Cape Verde is a great year-round holiday destination.

Let’s break it down so you know exactly what the deal is month by month.

Cape Verde in January

January is a budget-friendly choice for a Cape Verde getaway, offering lower average holiday prices. However, bear in mind that costs might spike around New Year celebrations at the beginning of the month.

Cape Verde weather in January: While still warm, temperatures ease down a bit in January. Expect around 22.7°C in Sal and 24°C in Boa Vista with approx. 9.4 hours of sunshine each day. Sal enjoys a rain-free month in January, but in Boa Vista there’s a slight chance of light and fleeting showers. Average wind speeds of 26 km/h are common on both islands which is perfect for kite surfing enthusiasts.

There are two Cape Verdean national holidays in January – Democracy Day on the 13th and Hero’s Day on the 20th. This could offer a chance to learn about Cape Verdean history and culture.

Cape Verde in February

While average package holiday prices see a slight uptick from January, they still linger on the budget-friendly side compared to peak times. It’s worth noting that the higher prices this month align with February school holidays.

Sunshine lasts for around 7.6 hours per day which is a drop from 10.6 hours in June. As the last month before the rainy season, July presents an ideal opportunity to get some sun before the rain sets in. What sets this month apart from the previous months is the significant drop in wind speeds marking a transition to calmer sea conditions. In July, winds subside to 20 km/h in both Sal and Boa Vista.

Cape Verde weather in October: October continues to provide the heat, with temperatures reaching 26.7°C in Sal and 29°C in Boa Vista. The islands revel in an average of 8.8 sunshine hours per day.

October marks the conclusion of the rainy season in Cape Verde, with precipitation reducing to a mere 11mm in Sal and 26mm in Boa Vista. And the waning rain leaves a lush landscape in its wake.

While Sal experiences a slight uptick in wind speed to 22 km/h, this remains lower than the peak windy season, ensuring a pleasant and comfortable environment for beachgoers.

Cape Verdean food is a delightful blend of West African, Portuguese, and Brazilian flavors.

Cachupa is the national dish. It’s a rich slow-cooked stew made with hominy (slow-cooked corn), beans and an assortment of locally grown vegetables. These can include sweet potatoes, plantains, squash, and yam.

There are different versions of this go-to dish: 

• cachupa pobra (poor) which contains only vegetables

As a slow-traveling family, we find great joy in immersing our children in diverse cultures – especially through the traditional dishes.

Most Cape Verde resorts will offer you all the international cuisine you could want – Indian, Chinese, French and Italian food, not forgetting sushi. 

But we’re not in Italy, or China, or any of those other countries. We’ve traveled across the Atlantic Ocean, to these tiny islands just off West Africa. Places that are steeped in rich history and traditions. Surely, we’re missing out if we cannot share in the unique cuisine of Cape Verde!

Tasting dishes that are deeply intertwined with local history, traditions, and values connects you to the true essence of a place. 

​And that experience isn’t reserved only for adults – kids can also create their own connection to the places you visit. It’ll just take a little extra effort and preparation.

We often prepare our kids for new flavors before we even arrive at a new destination. The result is that our picky eater can immerse himself in new cultural experiences without the anxiety that comes with trying completely new foods.

As a side note – some of the dishes we thought he’d struggle with most are now his favorites!

How To Introduce Kids to Traditional Cape Verdean Cuisine

Here are a couple of fun ways to get the kids interested in new foods:

1. Encourage them to learn the names of popular dishes in the local language (see above).
2. Involve them in the cooking process. Let them see, smell, and touch the ingredients as they are prepared.
3. Try substituting some of the ingredients for their favorites. For example: if they enjoy beef rather than pork, add that to the cachupa.
4. Try pointing out 3 things you enjoy about the dish and encourage your kids to do the same.

Many ingredients used in Cape Verdean cuisine are familiar: meat, fish, beans, rice, potatoes, and vegetables. They’re just prepared in different ways and so can look unfamiliar on the plate.

Kid-Friendly Cape Verdean Recipes

Cape Verdean National Dish: Cachupa Rica Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 kg of yellow hominy corn
• 330g mix of Fava beans, Kidney beans, Gungo Peas, Lima (butter) beans, Black beans
• 120 ml olive oil
• 2 L of water
• 2 bay leaves
• 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 chicken bouillon cube
• 2 tbsp tomato paste
• 2 large onions, chopped
• 6 leaves of kale (or savoy cabbage)
• 400 g of sweet potato, chopped
• 400 g of pumpkin, chopped
• 1 medium chorizo, sliced
• 150 g of bacon, chopped
• 1 kg of boneless pork spare ribs
• Salt and pepper

Directions

1. Preparation: Rinse the corn and beans.
2. Boil the Corn and Beans:
   • In a large pan, boil the corn for 10 minutes and carefully discard the froth that forms on top.
   • Add the beans, 1 bay leaf, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Bring back to the boil.
   • Reduce to medium heat (a slow and steady boil) and cook for an hour. Ensure there is enough water to cover the corn and beans throughout cooking. Leave the pan lid slightly ajar.
3. Add the Meats and Greens:
   • After 1 hour add the boneless pork spareribs, the chopped bacon, the sliced chorizo, and the kale (or savoy cabbage) to the pan.
   • Continue to cook over low heat for 30 minutes while sautéing the onions.
4. Sauté the Onions:
   • Saute the chopped onions, garlic, bouillon cube, and tomato paste in oil until very soft.
   • Add the second bay leaf.
   • Add this sauteed mixture to the stew and add salt and pepper to taste.
   • Continue to cook for another 30 minutes.
5. Add the Squash and Sweet Potato to the Stew: Then continue to cook for another 30 minutes.
6. Turn Off the Heat: Allow the stew to sit for 30 minutes so that the corn and beans can soak up the flavors.

Serving

Serve the Cachupa in deep dishes, making sure to include a generous amount of sauce. Tabasco sauce can be added at the end for those who like a bit of spice.

Cape Verdean Snack: Pastel d’Atum Recipe

If your kids like tuna, they will love these tasty fish pastries. They are very similar to an empanada, only they are filled with tuna. The recipe that I used, I found on Cooking with Mark & Oreo’s YouTube Channel.

Ingredients

• 3 tbsp olive oil
• Bottle of canola oil
• Two packets of pre-made empanada discs
• ½ a white onion, diced
• 6 bulbs of garlic, minced
• 3 small tins of tuna in olive oil
• 1 egg
• Fresh parsley, chopped
• Salt and black pepper
• Hot sauce (optional)

Directions

1. Prepare Tuna Mixture:
   • Add tuna to a large glass mixing bowl along with diced onions, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
   • If desired, add hot sauce for spice (adjust based on preference).
   • Crack the egg into the bowl and add chopped fresh parsley.
2. Cook Tuna Mixture:
   • Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
   • Add the tuna mixture to the pan.
   • Continuously stir the mixture over medium heat until it becomes dry (approximately 10-15 minutes).
   • Remove the pan from heat and let the mixture cool for 10-15 minutes.

3. Assemble Pastels:
   • Cut the pre-made empanada discs in half.
   • Stretch each half slightly and place 1 tsp of the tuna mixture onto the dough.
   • Fold the dough over and use your fingers to pinch both sides of the dough together.
   • Use a fork to press down on the pinched parts to prevent the mixture from escaping during frying.
   • Poke a couple of holes in the top of each pastel with the fork to allow steam to escape while cooking.
   • Repeat until all the tuna mixture is used (makes approximately 40 pastels. Reduce Ingredients accordingly if you want to make a smaller batch).
4. Frying the Pastels:
   • Add 2 inches of canola oil to a wide-bottomed pan over medium heat (adult supervision is recommended).
   • Once the oil is hot, carefully add 4-5 pastels at a time.
   • Flip each pastel with metal tongs when they start to turn golden brown on one side.
   • When golden brown on both sides, use the tongs to remove each pastel.
   • Shake off excess oil over the pan and place on a plate with kitchen roll to absorb any additional oil.
   • Repeat the cooking process in batches of 4-5 until all pastels are cooked.

Serving

Allow the pastels to cool and enjoy them as a hearty snack throughout the day.

Cape Verdean Drinks

When in Cape Verde it would be wrong not to try the national drink, grogue. Right? Made from sugar cane, this delicious alcoholic beverage can be likened to Rum. Just don’t get too carried away. At 40% alcohol content, Grogue packs a powerful punch!

And then there’s Cape Verde caipirinha – a Brazilian-inspired cocktail where grogue and ice are served over lime and cane sugar. It’s so refreshing!

But what about the kids? They could try a coconut milk chiller – a favorite with Cape Verdean children. I found the recipe below from Global Table Adventure so you can make it at home.

Cape Verde Drink Recipe for Kids: Coconut Milk Chiller

Ingredients

• ½ cup of coconut milk
• 1 cup of cow’s milk
• Sprinkle of ground cinnamon

Directions

In a word, yes. You can swim in the sea in Cape Verde, but it’s not as simple as walking out of your resort and diving straight in. The Cabo Verde archipelago sits in the Atlantic Ocean which is known for its powerful waves, currents, and undertows. These can pose safety risks, especially for children and weak swimmers.

Sal Island is home to the wave-kitesurfing championships. While Cape Verde’s sea draws in kitesurfers and surfers from around the world, even the strongest swimmers respect its power.

If you’re hoping to swim in the sea during your vacation, two main factors should guide your planning:

1. Location: Some areas on each island are more sheltered, making the water calmer. These spots are your best bet for swimming, though it’s still not recommended that children or weak swimmers enter the water unsupervised.
2. Time of Year: Winds are at their lowest between May and September, so the waters tend to be calmer. Booking your family holiday during this time increases your chances of enjoying a swim. Conversely, the islands are windiest between late November and March, when sea conditions are roughest.

Many of us don’t live close to the sea, so water safety isn’t always top of mind. Here’s a quick checklist to keep your family safe:

• Always swim near lifeguards: Lifeguards are usually stationed on touristy beaches, especially during high season.
• Respect colored flags: These provide crucial information about current sea conditions.
• Stay within flagged areas: These zones are designated as safe for swimming.
• Pack water shoes: Protect little feet from sea urchins and sharp rocks.

1. Santa Maria Pier, Sal Island

Most resorts in Sal are lined up along Santa Maria Beach. During our December 2022 visit, the sea outside our resort (RIU Palace Santa Maria) was too rough for the kids. But a 2 km walk (or short cab ride) to Santa Maria Pier revealed calmer waters. Lifeguards and green flags greeted us, and the kids had a blast hopping over the smaller waves.

If you’re staying on Sal, this is your best bet for swimming.

Getting to some of the best swimming spots often meant crossing rocky paths or uneven sand. We now travel in barefoot shoes like Vivobarefoot, which give much better ground feel and stability when moving around coastal areas with kids.

2. Praia do Estoril, Boa Vista

Located in the island’s capital, Sal Rei, Praia do Estoril is Boa Vista’s smallest beach. Its sheltered position protects it from the trade winds that create larger waves across much of the Cabo Verde archipelago. Thanks to this, the waves here are smaller, making it one of the best spots for swimming—though, as always in Cape Verde, calm conditions aren’t guaranteed!

During the high season, lifeguards monitor the beach, giving families extra peace of mind while enjoying the water.

3. Tarrafal Beach, Santiago Island

A 65 km journey north of Praia brings you to Tarrafal Beach. A sheltered cove area at the north end of the beach is a favorite with locals and tourists alike due to its calmer waters.

Lifeguards are on duty in high season.

4. Laginha Beach, Sao Vicente

This urban beach in Mindelo is perfect for families. The turquoise waters are calm enough for a relaxing swim, and lifeguards are present during high season. Plus, on clear days, as you sit with your back to the bustling city, you’ll see the island of Santo Antão just across the bay. To the other side is the famous silhouette of Monte Caro (Face Mountain).

The Best Cape Verde Beaches on Sal Island

#1 Santa Maria Beach

• Where: South Coast of Sal Island
• Beach: White sand
• Ocean: Large waves, calmer near Santa Maria pier
• Refreshments: Several Bars restaurants on the beach (Bounty Beach Restaurant, Barracuda Restaurant, Lachonette d’Angela)

Santa Maria’s white sandy beach on the south coast of Sal Island stretches on for miles. Many of the main resorts are just a stone’s throw away.

If, like us, you choose RIU Palace Santa Maria for your family holiday, a palm-lined path is all that separates you from the shore.

As you enter the beach, you’ll likely be greeted by friendly local tour guides. They’re lovely, not too pushy, but we did discover a nifty shortcut through the palm trees at the back of the beach to enjoy uninterrupted strolls.

Our kids, aged 6 and 8 years, had the best time jumping the waves in the shallows on Santa Maria beach. The ocean just beyond the resort isn’t ideal for swimming. But a slow stroll along the surf toward the Santa Maria Pier reveals calmer waters where bathing is possible. Just keep an eagle eye on the little ones; those waves can surprise you.

If your family is into water sports, Santa Maria Beach is a goldmine. Older kids and adults can test their mettle with kitesurfing – a two-hour session, anyone? If that’s not your cup of tea, scuba diving or snorkeling sessions might suit you better.

For those less inclined toward water sports, dive into the daily life of the Cape Verdean people at Santa Maria Pier. Around 11 am, you can watch the fishermen haul in their fresh catches. Fair warning, though – if you’re squeamish, the fish prep for eating happens right there on the pier. It’s a glimpse into local life that’s fascinating but perhaps a tad stomach-turning if you’re not used to it.

#2 Ponta Preta Beach

• Where: Southwest Coast of Sal Island
• Beach: White sand
• Ocean: Large waves, strong underwater currents
• Refreshments: Two Bars on the beach
• Public Toilets: No
• Outdoor Activities: Kite surfing, Dune

Ponta Preta Beach is a hidden gem accessible by a leisurely walk along Santa Maria Beach. To get there, head in the opposite direction to Santa Maria Pier. Although the distance to Ponta Preta Beach from Santa Maria Center isn’t far (approx. 2-3 km), the walk will take you around 3 hours. Sand and sun make the journey a little more challenging! If you’re up for it though, it’s well worthwhile.

This beach boasts the same white sands and crystalline waters as Santa Maria Beach but with an added touch of serenity. Notably quieter, Ponta Preta offers a more secluded escape for those seeking a peaceful family day out.

A distinctive feature of this beach is the expansive dune situated right at its center. Beyond serving as a picturesque backdrop, it provides plenty of entertainment (and exercise), especially for the little ones in your family.

Sun loungers are available near the beach bar and lifeguards keep watch. However, be mindful that, like many beaches in Cape Verde, the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean and underwater currents take swimming off the cards.

Some beachgoers prefer to avoid the sun loungers because they’re packed so close together. Instead, Tripadvisor reviewers recommend opting for the rock shelters on the beach.

The Best Cape Verde Beaches in Boa Vista

#3 Chaves Beach

• Where: West Coast of Boa Vista Island
• Beach: White sand
• Ocean: Large waves, strong underwater currents
• Refreshments: Pérola de Chaves Restaurant & Bar

• Outdoor Activities: Kite surfing, quad biking

Chaves Beach on Boa Vista stretches from the Morro de Areia Nature Reserve in the south to Praia das Dunas in the north. Spanning a generous 5.6 km, this white sandy beach is adorned with resorts, yet its vastness means you can always find a peaceful spot.

Make your way along Chaves Beach and you’ll encounter the distinctive Chaves Chimney (Chamine de Chave). This historic landmark stands tall against the dunes. Take time to explore the remnants of the late 19th-century brick factory. You can still see metallic artifacts of old machinery poking through the sand.

Adjacent to this historical site is the Pérola de Chaves Bar. Here you can sip a refreshing drink before making your way back to the comfort of your resort.

As you journey back, keep an eye out for the rock pools harboring an array of small fish. The kids will love discovering what hides inside them. One TripAdvisor reviewer even stumbled upon a large dogfish!

#4 Santa Monica Beach

• Outdoor Activities: Kite surfing, quad biking, 4×4 tours
• Nearby Attractions: Museu dos Naufragos (a small museum showcasing Cape Verdean history)

Spanning over 11 km, Santa Monica Beach is Boa Vista’s longest and most untouched stretch of white sand. Here you’ll find little more than crystal clear water and sand – but that it what makes it so special. It’s truly rare to find these hidden gems that are not yet bustling with tourists.

Santa Monica Beach is nestled within a tourism development zone, so it’ll likely soon be lined with resorts. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this unspoiled paradise as it is now!

While taxis offer access to this location, the most adventurous way to visit is by quad bike as part of a group tour. Alternatively, if quad biking is not your cup of tea, a 4×4 tour can provide a more comfortable alternative.

These shorelines are home to vibrant marine life, evident in the multitude of shells scattered along the sand. At the right times, lucky visitors can catch glimpses of turtles, huge crabs, and distant humpback whales.

Be sure to pack the essentials – sun hats, sun cream, and plenty of water. There is only one café at one end of the beach and very little vegetation to offer natural shade.

Keep in mind that the waves tend to be more powerful than those around Sal Rei’s coast. Rarely do the green flags fly here so don’t get your hopes up for swimming.

The Best Cape Verde Beach on Santiago Island

#5 Tarrafal Beach

• Where: North Coast of Santiago Island
• Beach: Golden with traces of black volcanic sand
• Ocean: Large waves, calmer at the northern end
• Refreshments: Nearby restaurants, drinks for sale on the beach
• Public Toilets: No
• Outdoor Activities: Snorkeling, kayaking, Surfing, Beach Volleyball, Tarrafal Beach Tour
• Nearby Attractions: Chao Bom Concentration Camp (Resistance Museum)

Santiago Island is home to Praia, the capital city of the Cabo Verde archipelago. But if you venture 68 km to the north of the island, you’ll find Tarrafal Beach. Here colorful fishing boats line the white sand and the island’s mountains provide a stunning backdrop.

At Tarrafal Beach you’ll find a mixture of tourists and locals enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Each morning fisherman pull their boats to shore filled with fresh fish – they’re then sold to local families awaiting their arrival.

To the north of the beach is a cove where bathers congregate due to the calmer water. But as with all the beaches in Cape Verde, check for the green flags and lifeguards. At times, there are strong waves and underwater currents, so it’s not recommended to allow children or weak swimmers in the water by themselves.

Natural shade can usually be sought beneath palm trees on the beach. And depending on the time of day you’ll meet local women selling coconuts and Caiperinha (a Brazilian cocktail) from their stands. Don’t forget to bring some change for a refreshing drink!

There are no restrooms directly on the beach so you may need to visit some of the local restaurants just a short walk away. While there, why not try local fresh fish cooked the Italian way at Alto Miro or sample the small but worthwhile menu at Le Buzio.

The Best Cape Verde Beaches on Sao Vicente Island

#6 Sao Pedro Beach

• Where: South Coast of Sao Vicente Island
• Beach: Golden with black volcanic sand
• Ocean: Large powerful waves and underwater currents
• Refreshments: Nearby Restaurants
• Restrooms: No
• Outdoor Activities: Boat tours, turtle watching, hiking
• Nearby Attractions: Lighthouse (Farol do Cabo de São Vicente)

São Pedro Beach is quieter than the more touristy spots like Santa Maria Beach on Sal Island. In fact, on a good day, it might just be you and a few local fishermen!

Getting to São Pedro is straightforward and if you’re staying in Mindelo you can book a 10km taxi ride from your accommodation (for around €20).

If you’re a seasoned swimmer or a surfing enthusiast, São Pedro’s waves are your playground. But if you’re planning a family swim day, especially with little ones or less confident swimmers, Cape Verde beaches are not your best bet.

If swimming is a must, you can swim in the nearby Hotel Foya Branca’s pool for a small fee and lunch is thrown in for good measure.

For the bold and height-loving, there’s a hike from the beach up to the lighthouse. The trek takes about 35-40 minutes, though it’s not the best choice if you have younger explorers. Tread carefully as the narrow paths get pretty sketchy in places. Once you reach the lighthouse, the views are breathtaking, and you could treat yourself to a well-deserved lunch at the Santo André Restaurant.

Here’s a quirky bonus: Sao Vicente’s’ airport is just behind São Pedro Beach. The thrill of incoming aircraft up close is a sure-fire way to keep both kids and adults entertained!

#7 Laginha Beach

• Where: North Coast of Sao Vicente Island
• Beach: White sand
• Ocean: Small waves, calmer than other Cape Verde beaches
• Refreshments: Two restaurants on the beach, others behind the beach

• Restrooms: Yes
• Outdoor Activities: Catamaran Boat Rides, Beach Volleyball & Football
• Nearby Attractions: Mindelo Center, Fortim del Rei

Laginha Beach offers a unique coastal experience right in the heart of the urban action. It is nestled within convenient walking distance from Mindelo center, Cape Verde’s second-largest city. A stroll to the beach will take around 15-20 minutes along the scenic seafront.

Much like the signature white sands and turquoise waters of Sal and Boa Vista, Laginha Beach boasts a picturesque shoreline. However, what sets it apart is the calmness of its waters. Shielded by Mindelo harbor, the waves here are gentler compared to other islands in the Cabo Verde archipelago.

However, keep in mind that the water gets deep quickly so the little ones will need close supervision.

From the beach, you’ll see Santo Antão Island on the horizon, reachable by ferry in just an hour. On the opposing side stands Monte Caro, or Face Mountain, named for its distinctive silhouette. Depending on the season, the sun sets behind either Santa Antão or Monte Caro.

There are two restaurants directly on the beach and several more tucked away on the opposite side of the road.

Laginha Beach offers a distinct experience from Sao Pedro Beach further along the coast – it’s certainly worth a visit!
