Zagorič also has a bit of a mixed reputation when it comes to safety. Located behind Gorica Hill, it’s a suburban area filled with low-rise houses and apartments where many families live. • Priority: If you step onto the crossing while the light is green for you, drivers are required to stop and let you pass.

For Drivers:

• Watch for Pedestrians: If you see a green right arrow at an intersection, you can start moving. However, if pedestrians have a green light and are crossing, you must stop right away.
• Stop for Pedestrians: Always be prepared to stop if someone is crossing. Wait until all pedestrians have completely cleared the crossing before you continue driving.

Dining Options At Perla Residence Hotel & Spa

One of the major highlights during our stay was the delicious breakfast included in the room price. Served in the restaurant opposite reception, you’ll find everything from fresh pastries and coffee to cereals, fruits, and hot dishes.

However, it’s worth noting that breakfast is the only meal served in the hotel restaurant. For other meals, guests have several options:

1. Local Restaurants: You’ll need to head out to one of the nearby restaurants for dinner. We enjoyed a delicious meal at Tortilja Bar Bonito just round the corner. We also walked to Hard Rock Cafe in the city center one evening and had a great meal.
2. In-Room Cooking: There’s a Voli supermarket within walking distance where you can stock up on basics and prepare light meals in your private kitchen.
3. Food Delivery: The hotel allows delivery from local restaurants registered on the Glovo App. We ordered dinner this way one night, and the receptionist called our room when it arrived so we could go downstairs to pay.
4. Room Service: A limited range of food options and alcoholic drinks is available through room service.

While not having the hotel restaurant open for other meals is a slight inconvenience, guests have plenty of dining alternatives.

Wellness and Leisure Activities at Perla Residence

The Perla Residence has a spa and wellness centre, which features an indoor swimming pool and a sauna. The pool is open from 8 am to 8 pm, and children are welcome to use it with adult supervision. We spent a lot of time in the pool and sauna – mostly we were the only ones in there!

Some reviewers noted that the pool is quite small and a little cold for the kids. Others mentioned that some of the hydromassage areas in the pool were not working during their stay. I agree that the pool area would feel a bit cramped if there were several guests in there at the same time. But with regards the water temperature, it wasn’t too bad! We’ve been in much colder swimming pools.

While the Perla Residence does not have a dedicated on-site gym, it does offer a fitness centre. Guest reviews mention that the gym could be improved by adding heavier free weights and that some machines were broken during their stay. My husband used the fitness room once during our stay but struggled to get a good workout session in due to lack of space and equipment.

If you plan to stay for longer than a few days at Perla Residence and want to work out, Industry Gym is just 300 meters walk from the hotel. Reviewers felt that the price was reasonable and the equipment was more than adequate.

Perla hotel also provides a range of spa treatments, including massages. The massage list is considered extensive and offers good value for money. Unfortunately, we were unable to book a massage during our stay due to the spa staff being on leave.

Parking and Wheelchair Accessibility at Perla Residence

If you’ll be arriving in your car, Perla Residence offers free parking outside, which can be reserved at reception, subject to availability. Some reviewers mentioned that they ended up parking on the road outside on some nights due to the car park being full.

Inside, there is a good-sized elevator, making it great for those with mobility issues or parents with prams.

Perla Residence Wifi Policy

Perla Residence offers free WiFi available in all areas of the hotel. While a couple of reviewers mentioned that the WiFi wasn’t fast enough, we found the connection to be satisfactory during our stay.

As we rely on the Internet for work, we couldn’t live without our WiFi hotspot, the Netgear Nighthawk M1. Even when our accommodation’s WiFi connection is poor, we always have access to the internet through our hotspot. 

Location and Nearby Attractions

While Perla is located on the outskirts of the city center, it takes about 20 minutes to walk there. Taxis are also very affordable; the receptionists at Perla were always happy to order taxis for us when we needed them.

If you’re coming straight from the airport, Perla Residence is 14 km (approximately a 20-minute drive) away. The hotel offers an airport shuttle service (15 EUR one-way), which can be arranged after booking.

While Perla is located on the outskirts of the city center, you can walk it in around 20 minutes. Taxis are also very affordable – the receptionists at Perla were always happy to order us taxis when we needed them.

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is a fantastic destination for families. We arrived by bus from Tirana in September 2024 and spent two months immersing ourselves in the local lifestyle. We got to know the place, the people, and the culture first hand.

While Podgorica may not be renowned for its stunning architecture, some even label it Europe’s most boring capital, we found its charm lies beneath the surface. Locals often expressed surprise at our decision to stay longer than a few days, but we believe Podgorica has much to offer to those willing to look beyond initial impressions.

Podgorica is home to Aerodromi Crne Gore (Podgorica Airport). After touching down on Montenegrin soil, many travelers stay in Podgorica for a few days before heading out the coast – Budva and Kotor are just an hour away.

In Summer, temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius, which makes venturing out of your hotel less appealing. But on cooler days, why not get out and explore? It’s easy and cheap to get around Podgorica by taxi. We used the TeslaGo App (Apple, Android) and were able to order Tesla Taxis around the clock for a very affordable price. It was only slightly more expensive than a regular taxi!

Montenegro uses the Euro, and there are ATMs everywhere. Just be aware you’ll likely pay an ATM fee (~3 EUROs), so it often makes sense to take out all the cash you’ll need in one go. WiFi is fast and free in most places.

We spent two nights at Perla Residence in September 2024, and it’s easy to see why it’s a top choice for families visiting Podgorica. With an impressive 9.1 rating from 1,288 guests, the positive feedback speaks for itself.

Originally, we hadn’t planned to stay at the hotel; at the time we were living with a lovely family in Zabjelo. However, after seeing how nice the apartments were during our visit to a family member who had booked one, we couldn’t resist checking for availability. We headed straight to the reception, where the friendly receptionist quickly helped us secure an apartment of our own.

Our apartment at Perla Residence wasn’t quite as spacious as the one our family member had booked. Her apartment featured a roomy living area, kitchen, bathroom, double bedroom, and even an office! In contrast, ours lacked the office space, and the living room had been converted into a bedroom for the kids. However, we can’t complain, we hadn’t booked in advance like she did.

During our stay, we made full use of the swimming pool and sauna. Rick tried out the fitness room once but found it a bit cramped with limited equipment, so he decided not to return. There was also a small children’s play area just outside the hotel, which was a nice bonus.

Breakfast was included, and it was delicious! The spread featured a mix of hot options like sausages, eggs, and bacon, along with continental choices. We enjoyed a variety of pastries, cereals, and fresh fruit, all complemented by coffee from the machine. The restaurant staff were lovely and great with the kids.

The hotel is located on the outskirts of town, but we found it easy to walk to the Hard Rock Cafe in the city center in about 25 minutes. There are also some small restaurants just around the corner; we dined at Tortilja Bar Bonito one evening. It’s a cozy café with exceptionally friendly service and delicious meat or veggie-filled tortillas.

After our two-night stay at Perla Residence, we felt incredibly rested and rejuvenated. We would definitely consider returning in the future, especially to take advantage of their discount for stays over 28 days. We highly recommend this hotel for families or travelers looking for a longer-term stay!

Sometimes, all you want after a flight is to check into a hotel and unwind. Hotel Aria is the closest hotel to Podgorica Airport, making it a super practical choice for weary travelers. The convenience of reaching it in just about two minutes is a luxury in itself!

Hotel Aria is conveniently located just 900 meters from Podgorica Airport in the Mahala neighborhood. The hotel offers a free shuttle service starting at 7 AM, but if you arrive outside those hours, you can easily get there with a quick 2-minute taxi ride or a 10-minute walk. If you’re planning to head into the city center, just keep in mind that it’s about a 7 km taxi ride.

Guests can enjoy soundproof rooms, an à la carte restaurant with a lovely terrace, a bar, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of free parking, what more could you ask for?

One of the highlights for many guests is the generous breakfast served from 7 AM to 11 AM. Instead of the usual buffet style, Hotel Aria prepares breakfast fresh to order. Several reviewers have noted that the portion sizes are huge, with some even saying that “one portion will feed two.” And if you have an early departure, you can request a packed lunch at no extra charge!

While most guests find the hotel comfortable and convenient (especially for those early flights) there are a few mixed reviews. Some rooms have been described as “dated,” with stained carpets and hand-held showerheads over the bath. One guest mentioned dealing with a non-functional TV and limited space in their room.

The seasonal pool is another feature worth mentioning; it’s a decent size but is open to the public, so it can get crowded at times.

If you’re planning to travel from Tirana to Podgorica, you’ve probably already realized there are no direct flights or trains between Albania and Montenegro. That means your only real option is to go by road.

In August 2024, after spending three amazing months in Tirana, my family of four hopped on a bus for the 3.5-hour ride to Podgorica, Montenegro. When planning the trip, I couldn’t find much clear information online, which made me a little nervous. So, in this post, I’m sharing our experience to help you feel more confident and prepared for your journey.

We Took the Albania to Montenegro Bus!

With no flights or trains between Albania and Montenegro, we decided the bus was our best option. It was much cheaper than a taxi and way easier than dealing with a rental car. I booked our tickets for the 164 km journey about two weeks in advance through Traveling (formerly GetByBus). If you’re planning to do the same, definitely book ahead, our 6 am bus was fully booked!

I’ll be honest: after reading some not-so-great reviews, I was a bit nervous about the trip. Traveling with two kids in 35°C heat didn’t exactly scream “fun family outing,” but we didn’t have many alternatives. So, I crossed my fingers, took a deep breath, and hoped for the best.

How To Reach Podgorica from Tirana

If you’re planning to take the bus from Tirana to Podgorica, you have two main booking platforms to choose from: FlixBus and Traveling.

Five buses run the route daily, with journey durations ranging from 3 to 5 hours.

Here’s a breakdown of the current schedule (as of July 2025):

• 06:00 – Drita Travel

Service Overview

The Vehicle

Although you’ll book your tickets through the FlixBus or Traveling platforms, the buses themselves are operated by local service providers. So, don’t expect the all-singing-all-dancing FlixBus-branded vehicles you might have seen online.

We traveled on the 6 a.m. bus run by Drita Travel, a small but comfortable Mercedes bus with seating arranged in rows of 2 x 1. The seats were reasonably comfy, and the air conditioning worked (most of the time). It did struggle a bit while we waited at the border, but overall, it kept things bearable, even in the August heat. The bus left Tirana with a few empty seats, but these were quickly filled during a stop in Shkodër to pick up more passengers.

Luggage

You can bring one suitcase to be stowed in the luggage compartment (for an extra 2 EUR fee) and a smaller carry-on that fits under your seat. Make sure to carry some cash for the luggage fee. It’s collected on the spot and can catch you out if you’re unaware!

The Journey

Our trip was straightforward and surprisingly smooth. If you’ve ever driven on Albanian roads, you’ll know why we were so relieved to have a competent and cautious driver.

The scenery was the highlight: a mix of rugged mountains and countryside, made even more breathtaking at sunrise. It was a refreshing change after three bustling months in the built-up city of Tirana.

We made a brief stop in Shkodër, but there were no restroom or refreshment breaks during the 3.5-hour ride. If you’re taking a longer service, this might vary, but it’s best to come prepared.

The Border Crossing

Crossing from Albania into Montenegro was relatively painless. Here’s what to expect:

• Step 1: Albanian Border
  Everyone gets off the bus to present their passports at the border control office. For us, this process was quick and efficient. Then it’s back onto the bus.
• Step 2: Montenegro Border
  A very short distance later (we’re talking a few meters at most!), it’s time to disembark again for the Montenegro border. The officers were friendly enough, and the entire process took about 30 minutes from start to finish.

While waiting in the summer heat was a bit uncomfortable (thanks to the inconsistent air conditioning), we had no major complaints, especially after reading stories of longer delays from other travelers.

Our Verdict

We were pleasantly surprised by the journey. Our kids slept most of the way (early departures do have their perks!), and we spent the time soaking in the views. The trip was simple, stress-free, and budget-friendly: perfect for our family of four.

The Good and the Not-So-Good

Positives

Easy Booking: Booking through Traveling or FlixBus is straightforward and hassle-free.
Digital Tickets: No need to print anything. The driver scanned the QR code from our phone.
Comfortable Ride: The journey was smooth and relatively comfortable.

Things to Keep in Mind

Luggage Fee: There’s a small fee for checked luggage (2 EUR per item), so have some cash handy. It’s not expensive, but it’s good to know in advance.
No Amenities: These buses don’t have Wi-Fi, onboard toilets, or other amenities you might expect from FlixBus-branded vehicles.
No Breaks on Shorter Trips: If you’re taking the 3.5-hour service, don’t count on restroom or snack stops along the way. Plan ahead so you have time to use the restroom before departure and bring your own (odorless) snacks.
Border Stops: Getting on and off the bus twice at the border might be tricky for those with limited mobility.

A Bit About the Bus Terminals

Tirana East Bus Terminal

If you’re confused about which bus terminal in Tirana your journey starts from, you’re not alone. I spent ages trying to figure it out myself. Even when we finally arrived at the terminal, I still wasn’t 100% sure we were in the right place. To make things trickier, the same booking platform might call it by different names.

For clarity: the terminal you’re looking for is the Tirana East Bus Terminal, also known as Tirana East Gate (TEG) or Terminali Lindor. This is where all buses to Podgorica depart from. It’s located just below the Tirana East Gate Shopping Centre.

Of all the bus terminals in the city, this one felt the most organized and easy to navigate. Compared to the chaotic North and South stations, TEG was far less overwhelming. A big relief if you’re arriving with kids or visiting Tirana for the first time.

Getting There

TEG is not within walking distance of Tirana’s city center, so you’ll need to catch a cab or hop on one of two bus routes to get there:

Line 8A: This is the most direct route and takes about 35 minutes from the city center. Buses run every 15 minutes from the Dollari B stop.

Line 2 (Kopshti Zoologji): A more scenic option that passes landmarks like the old train station, Blloku, Tirana Park, the Zoo, and the Botanical Gardens. It takes about 45 minutes and runs every 20 minutes from the Dollari A stop.

Both options cost the standard fare (40 lek), payable to a ticket collector once onboard. These bus lines run from 6 am to 11 pm. So, if you’re taking the early 6 am Tirana to Podgorica bus, you’ll definitely need to grab a taxi to arrive on time.

Finding Your Tirana to Podgorica Bus

We would recommend arriving at least 15–20 minutes early to locate your bus. The terminal can feel a bit confusing at first, but don’t worry, staff are often on hand to help. An employee directed us to our bus, informed us it would be a bit late, and even described the vehicle’s color. While this may not happen every time, the assistance was reassuring.

If you haven’t pre-booked tickets, you’ll find different companies at the terminal offering times and prices for their services that day.

Amenities

TEG offers plenty of conveniences:

• Sheltered waiting areas to escape the sun or rain.
• Public toilets.
• Cafes and shops for snacks or drinks before your journey.

If you have extra time, you can also explore the TEG shopping mall, which has department stores and a cinema.

Podgorica Main Bus Station

At the end of your journey, you’ll arrive at Podgorica’s Main Bus Terminal: a small but functional station.

What to Do First

After a long ride, you may want to find the toilets right away. They’re located outside along the right-hand side of the station and cost 0.50 EUR to use, so make sure you’ve got some spare change (Albanian lek won’t work here).

SIM Cards

If you’re staying in Podgorica for a while, you might need a local SIM card. There’s a small newsagent inside the station where you can purchase one. Plans are displayed on posters, so you can pick one that suits your needs.

Tourist Tax

If you’re staying in Podgorica for more than a day, there’s a small tourist tax you’ll need to pay. Hotels usually handle this for you, but if you’re in an Airbnb or private rental, you’ll need to register at the Tourist Organisation Office.

The office is about 1.4 km from the bus station. It’s a 20-minute walk if you’re feeling up for it, or a short (and cheap) taxi ride if you’d rather save your energy.

Opening Times are as follows:

• Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
• Saturday: Closes early at 1 p.m.
• Sunday: Closed.

The cost is super reasonable: 1 EUR per day for the first 30 days of your trip. After that, you’re off the hook for payment but still need to register your stay. Kids under 12 are free.

If you arrive outside office hours, just make it your priority to visit on Monday. Skipping this step can cost you big time. Some travelers have been fined a whopping 150 EUR for not having their pink slip. We didn’t get asked for ours when leaving the country, but it’s really not worth the gamble for just a few euros.

Conclusion

In the end, taking the bus from Tirana to Podgorica was surprisingly pleasant. It’s a journey we’d recommend to anyone traveling between these neighboring countries.
