15 Exciting Things to Do in Sal Cape Verde (For All Ages!)

If you’re looking for exciting things to do in Sal, Cape Verde, I’m happy to help. Our family of four travelled to Sal Island in December 2022 and like you, I wanted to be sure we could keep our two energetic bundles of joy entertained.

When you think of Cape Verde, visions of white sandy beaches and clear water come to mind—the stereotypical paradise. And don’t get me wrong, that is exactly what lies in wait!

But days of sitting in the sun with a cocktail in hand seem slightly unrealistic now that you have the kids in tow…

Well, don’t write it off completely! It’s all about compromise. So long as everyone gets to do something they enjoy at some point during the vacation you should get plenty of time to kick back and relax in the sun.

You’ll be pleased to know that Sal has plenty to offer for families. Let’s get to the 15 best things to do in Sal, Cape Verde.

For Cape Verde Travel We Recommend…

Sal is one of ten volcanic islands that make up the Cape Verde archipelago, officially known as the Republic of Cabo Verde. Situated 350 miles off the West African coast, Sal is known for its pristine white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant local culture.

Complete Excursion and Flight on the Zipline Cabo Verde

  • FREE Cancellation | From €49.00

It would be wrong of me to write an article about the top things to do in Sal Cape Verde and not mention the famous zipline. This zipline experience takes you 1km across the island at speeds of up to 100km/h!

Once you reach the 100-meter-high platform the fun and games begin. Music, dancing, and a refreshing drink will help settle your nerves before you take the leap.

You won’t be disappointed by the spectacular 360 panoramic views of the ocean and the Serra Negra nature reserve.

Espargos Cape Verde Viator

Sal island: Espargos city tour, Local life and Cape Verde Tapas

  • FREE Cancellation | From €30.00

Santa Maria steals the tourist spotlight on Sal Island, but the real local vibe unfolds in the capital city – Espargos. Trust me; it’s a must for the most authentic island experience.

Travelling between Santa Maria and Espargos on the bus costs around €1 per person. You’ll find the bus stop in Santa Maria (three streets back from the waterfront to be precise). And after a 20-minute ride, you’ll be dropped off at Espargos’ bus station (just past the first roundabout on the left).

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous you could opt for an Aluguer into the capital. These are shared minibusses nicknamed ‘Yasi’ or ‘Hilux.’ You can jump on board at unmarked areas around town and they’ll drop you off wherever you like for a few euros.

You can also book a guided tour around the local streets of Espargos.

private boat tour viator
  • FREE Cancellation | From €185.00

If it’s a day out on the ocean you’re looking for, the options are plentiful.

I’ve found some of the best family-friendly options, including a half-day (3-hour) catamaran cruise. All ages are welcome on these trips. An open bar, snacks, and snorkelling equipment are also included in the price! Keep your eyes peeled for the rich marine life off the Cape Verde Islands, including whales, turtles, and dolphins.

If half a day isn’t long enough, you could also book a day trip on the yacht (6.5 hours) and get your lunch included.

For a slightly more comfortable experience, there is a 4-hour trip on a lounge catamaran. Just be sure you book onto the family-friendly package, as they also provide adult-only trips.

Finally, if you were hoping for something a little more personal you can book your family onto a 2-hour private boat tour. With only your family to cater for you’ll have more choice over how you spend your time at sea – you could opt for fishing, snorkelling, or just sit back and enjoy the views.

Pedra Lume Sal Cape Verde: salt mine

If you’ve never floated in the Dead Sea before, the Pedra Lume Salt Mine could be the next best thing.

Sal means salt in Portuguese. It’s no surprise then that Sal gets its name from its salt mining industry. These days the salt industry is not as big, but Pedra Lume remains open as a tourist attraction.

Although the surroundings are not quite as beautiful as the nearby coastline, the floating experience is well worth the visit and the small entry fee. Most main hotels and local tour operators include Pedra Lume salt lake in their day trip packages.

Here’s one for the nature lovers. Why not spend a couple of hours exploring Sal’s plant life in the botanical gardens? Trees, plants, exotic flowers, and cacti are at home in these beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

There are also birds and rescue animals, including goats, donkeys, rabbits, and turtles, to keep the kids occupied. Don’t forget to stop by the onsite café to enjoy a cold beer or hot drink of your choice!

Santa Maria Beach

This white sandy beach is situated to the south of Sal in the main tourist hub of the island. Many of Sal’s main resorts are located just off the beach, including the RIU Palace where we stayed in December 2022.

Bask in the sun, stroll along the soft sands, and at the end of the day witness the breathtaking sunset that graces this idyllic stretch of coastline.

Our children (ages 6 and 8 at the time) had hours of fun playing in the sand and jumping over the waves in the shallows. The waves were quite powerful when we were there though, so swimming was off the cards.

Twice we walked along the beach to Santa Maria Pier, and we found that the sea was slightly calmer there. There was a lifeguard on duty and the green flags were up. Just remember to take plenty of water, suncream and hats. The wind is deceiving and it’s a long way to walk back after a day baking in the sun!

If you’re looking to buy souvenirs on your trip to Sal, I highly recommend venturing beyond the large resorts to one of the three Djunta Mo Art stores in Santa Maria. They have a strict no plastics/tat policy and all the gifts are made locally in Cape Verde.

There is something for all the family in these stores. You’ll find local sweets, treats (and rum for the adults!) as well as handcrafted bags, art, and sculptures. The ladies in the store are extremely welcoming and what I liked most was the lack of pressure to buy anything.

As you walk along Santa Maria beach you’ll eventually reach the wooden Santa Maria pier. Here you can immerse yourself in local life and witness the hustle and bustle as fishermen bring in their daily catches.

If you want to watch the fisherman as they return from their trip at sea, 11 am is the best time to get there. Just be aware that it might not be the best choice for the squeamish! The fish are prepared for eating fresh off the boats.

Santa Maria Pier Sal Cape Verde

As well as the fisherman, you’ll also come across many local people crafting and selling souvenirs.

The beach gets busy around the pier, but we still found a good spot near the shore. Here we rested for an hour or two before heading back to our resort.

Baby turtle on Santa Maria Beach
  • FREE Cancellation | From €30.00

Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs on Sal’s beaches every year between July and October. Some of the beaches are closed during the breeding season, but this 3-hour package allows you and your family to watch the turtles make their way up the beach from the ocean under the night sky. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see the baby turtles hatching.

The tour operators are passionate about preserving these beautiful creatures. You’ll be given a briefing at the start of the tour to ensure that everyone is as respectful as possible when visiting the turtles’ habitat.

Lemon Shark Fins
  • FREE Cancellation | Cost: €2 for shoe hire

On the East side of Sal Island is Shark Bay – another hotspot included in most day tour packages. Here you can get up close and personal with the baby lemon sharks. Just 10 meters from the shore they’ll swim around your feet as you wade through the water.

You’ll need to wear water shoes as the rocks are sharp. These can be hired at the water’s edge if you don’t have your own (although hiring them may not be possible if you’re visiting on your own out of hours!).

The sharks you’ll come across during this experience are small, but adult Lemon Sharks can grow to 11 feet in total! Don’t worry though – these magnificent creatures are not a threat to humans. They’re happy eating greens and other small fish.

On the Northeast coast of Sal Island, you can explore Buracona Lagoon (AKA Blue Eye). This natural underwater cave is filled with clear water. If you’re there at the right time of day, the combination of sunlight, clear water, and rocky formations creates a mesmerizing illusion. You’ll quickly come to understand why the lagoon is called Blue Eye.

If you are unlucky enough to miss out on this experience, you can still enjoy the breath taking surroundings from a small watchtower nearby.

Don’t forget to pack your swimming gear and towels. Although you can’t swim in the Blue Eye itself, if the sea isn’t too rough you’ll be able to swim in some of the nearby pools. There is also a gift shop where you can buy nice souvenirs to remember your trip.

If you have young children, you’ll need to be extra cautious near the edge of the pool as there aren’t any barriers! This is why I’ve listed this one as suitable for older children.

Quad biking touring in Sal Cape Verde
  • FREE Cancellation | From €90.00 per group

Here’s another one for the adrenaline junkies. Your private guide will take you off-road on a two-hour trek across the deserts, beaches, and nature reserves of Sal Island. The package includes pick-up and drop-off from many of the major resorts (excluding Murdeira Village) which is always a bonus! And you’ll also be provided with a suit, helmet, belt, and glasses.

Remember to check the rules on the website before booking. The driver must be a minimum of 18 years old and able to show a valid driving license. Children over 6 years old can ride with a qualifying adult.

Night time buggy experience viator
  • FREE Cancellation | From €140.00 per group

Maybe you’ve done quad biking before and want a new experience. Well, for something unique that you won’t forget in a hurry, book the Buggy Night-time Experience! Take in the best views of the starry African night sky from the deserts and dunes before stopping in at Santa Maria for a non-alcoholic cocktail.

Again, check the rules on the website before booking. For this one, the driver is required to be over 21 years old and able to show their driver’s license.

Snorkeling experience Sal, Vape Verde
  • FREE Cancellation | From €30

The coastal areas in Sal are a vibrant and largely unexplored world of marine life. The Zodiac boat will take you out to the best snorkelling spots in Santa Maria Bay so you can encounter all kinds of tropical fish and sea turtles.

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or a first-timer, the professional guides on this trip will ensure that you’re well-prepared and safe for the water.

kite surfing Sal Cape Verde
  • FREE Cancellation | From €90

As you stroll along Santa Maria Beach, you’ll come across several people trying out kitesurfing for the first time. While we didn’t take part ourselves, we had a great time watching.

This could be an excellent option for any thrill seekers in the family! It’s definitely one for the bucket list. Booking is for a minimum of two people and the price includes the gear, bottled water, and a professional instructor for 2 hours.

I hope this comprehensive roundup of the top things to do in Sal Cape Verde has inspired you.

From the captivating underwater wonders of Buracona Lagoon to the exhilarating zipline, Sal Island has it all. Whether you seek relaxation on pristine beaches or adrenaline-fueled adventures, Sal caters to the whole family.
