Our Experience With the Eastpak Carry Pack

We picked up the Eastpak Carry Pack because we needed a flexible, lightweight bag for all of the kids’ gear. Our lifestyle is centered around our minimalist profile and although we like to keep things light, our equipment continually evolves to fit our needs. The kids are growing up fast and their interests changing constantly; they’ve both acquired “stuff” from their birthdays this year. It’s time for a new travel bag!

Having trusted Eastpak before, the Carry Pack felt like the natural “second bag” for our family. And after using it across cities, airports, buses, and random day trips, we’ve gathered a solid picture of what it can (and can’t) do.

What We Needed From a 30L Travel Bag

The Eastpak Carry Pack ticked most of those boxes straight away.

Bear in mind, we don’t travel with hold luggage and we’re already maxed out on our hand-luggage allowance. Our only real option was to add another overhead-sized bag like the Tranverz S or Transit R, but we didn’t want a second set of wheels to manage. So we chose something that could be carried instead… which usually means Rick ends up wearing it.

Although the Eastpak Carry Pack is designed to be worn like a backpack, that didn’t work for us, we already travel with ECOHUB cabin bags on our backs. Using the Carry Pack as a duffel gives us a lightweight, under-10kg overhead bag that fits our setup perfectly and keeps my “did we leave something behind?” anxiety in check. Rick usually takes one for the team and carries it, fully embracing his unofficial travel-day role as Chief Carrier of Everything , but it’s the best system for our family, and he genuinely doesn’t mind the extra workout.

The shoulder strap does take a little adjusting at first, the bag’s shape can feel slightly asymmetrical until you find the sweet spot, but it’s nothing a bit of trial and error won’t sort out. The Eastpak Carry Pack has solved a specific problem for our family: it’s minimal, fits airline size requirements (overhead), and has kept our belongings safe trip after trip. However, it’s not perfect. It doesn’t come with a shoulder strap since back straps are built in by design. It’s inner compartments are built into the inner lining of the main compartment lid: this means you have to be wise when it comes to packing efficiently, particularly if you’re trying to stay within strict airline cabin bag limits. To be fair, these minor issues haven’t affected our overall satisfaction at all – it’s still a great travel bag.

Honest Review: What We Love About the Eastpak Carry Pack

Lightweight But More Spacious Than It Looks

At just 750 g, the Eastpak Carry Pack is surprisingly lightweight for a structured bag, and somehow manages to hold far more than you’d expect from a 30-litre pack. The boxy, rectangular shape makes packing feel intentional rather than chaotic, no more wrestling with curved, saggy daypacks that swallow your things unevenly. We’ve comfortably fit a few compression packed outfits, our electronics and chargers, snacks for the kids, travel documents, toiletries, a water bottle, and even a laptop without it feeling overstuffed. For a bag this light, it’s genuinely impressive how workable the space is. Be careful not to get too excited, it’s way easier to overpack with all that potential space for stuff.

But, if like us, you rely on the internet to earn a living, keep your kids connected to schoolwork, or simply avoid meltdowns during downtime, a solid mobile router isn’t optional.

We’ve stayed in Airbnbs with glowing Wi-Fi reviews, only to face unexpected 5-hour power outages. Without the M1, we’d have lost entire workdays, and more in income than the router costs outright.

We love seeing our kids make friends across cultures – that instant connection through play is something really special. But our skatepark moment showed us the flip side: that innocent willingness to engage needs to be paired with situational awareness.

Today’s kids (especially in Western countries) don’t often roam and play unsupervised like we might have. But those moments taught us so much about the world. As parents, our job isn’t to clip our kids’ wings with fear, but to give them the same radar we developed. The ability to read a changing crowd, to notice when energy shifts, to trust that inner nudge saying “something’s different now.”

Walking home from the skatepark that night, we spoke about how spaces can have unspoken rules, how to spot when playtime might be over, and why even friendly places require attention.

   Take a few minutes to watch the space before joining in. Notice:

   • Energy shifts (does the vibe change at certain times?)
2. Learn the Local Norms
   You don’t need to be an expert, but ask yourself:
   • Is this space mostly for toddlers by day, teens by night?
   • Do locals linger or wrap up by a certain hour?
     (In Agadir, we realized the skatepark’s “shift change” happened at dusk.)
3. Stay Present Without Hovering
   Even if you are allowing your children a degree of independence, keep an eye on their interactions and be ready to intervene if needed.
   • Position yourself where you can see exits and approaching groups
   • Avoid being distracted by your phone
4. Teach Awareness, Not Fear
   • For younger kids: “If you feel unsure, come find me.”
   • For older kids: “Notice how the crowd changes after sunset?”
5. Trust Your Gut Without Apology
   Situational awareness when traveling starts with trusting your gut. If your intuition says leave, don’t second-guess. We left the skatepark not because there was danger, but because the energy had shifted in a way I recognized from childhood. After 37 years, I don’t argue with my gut. When it says it’s time to go, it’s exactly that.

• Save money. Not just on flights, but also on airport transfers. Many transfer companies limit the number of suitcases they can carry, so packing light could mean the difference between booking a standard car or paying extra for a larger vehicle.
• Don’t need to waste time in the check-in line at the airport. In many airports you can skip this step and go straight to security if you’ve checked in online and are traveling carry on only.
• More hands free to keep hold of the kids in a busy airport and crossing roads at the other side of the journey. Have you ever tried keeping hold of two hyperactive kids while juggling three rucksacks and two big cases? I rest my case.
• Less clutter at your accommodation. Less time tidying up after everyone.
• Less chance of losing something – the fewer bags you have to keep an eye on (in between watching the kids) the less likely you are to leave something behind or lose it.
• Easier to pack everything back up at the end of your vacation so more time is freed up to do the fun stuff.
• Save your back. It wouldn’t be the first time we’d turned up to an Airbnb to realize it was on the 8^th floor and there was no elevator.

Packing light starts with a mental shift. As parents, we often operate on a “just in case” mentality—of course, we do, kids are unpredictable! But do you want to know the truth? You’re resourceful, and you can handle whatever comes your way. And most things can be bought on vacation if and when you need them. Commit to packing only what you truly need. Repeat after me: “Everything in this bag has to earn its place. No more freeloaders!”

8. Only Pack Clothes You Love

How many times have you packed that pretty dress that looks stunning on the hanger but never gets worn because it’s slightly see-through? Come on…own up!

Before we switched to minimal packing, I’d guiltily toss those “wardrobe orphans” into my suitcase, only to hang them up at our destination and still feel guilty for not wearing them. Sound familiar? Yep, it’s madness. But we’ve all been there.

Here’s the rule: EVERY item must earn its place. That means it has to look good, feel good, and make you feel fantastic when it’s on!

Shoes are one area where minimalist travel really pays off. Instead of packing multiple bulky pairs, we now rely on barefoot shoes that work across travel days, sightseeing, and everyday wear. 10. Ditch the Chunky Jumper

We all want to be prepared for the cold, especially when evenings can get chilly—even in warmer climates. But that chunky jumper will eat up half your luggage allowance, even with compression packing cubes.

Here’s our solution: wear a lightweight sweatshirt for your flight and pack a long-sleeved thermal top for each family member. On cooler days, layer the thermal under the sweatshirt for extra warmth. Add a lightweight rain jacket over the top to block wind or rain, and you’re set.

When the sun comes out and things heat up, simply peel off a layer or two and stash them in your backpack. These lightweight layers take up far less space than one bulky sweater, leaving you with more room for other essentials.

Is Traveling Light with Kids a Nightmare at Airport Security?

I get it—airport security is stressful enough without adding kids and multiple bags to the mix. Surely, it’s easier to check in all your luggage so you’ve only got the kids to manage, right? But please don’t let these doubts get the better of you. It’s totally manageable! Here’s how we do it:

1. Keep Electronics and Liquids Together

Don’t scatter these items across your carry-ons or the kids’ personal bags. Instead, pack all electronics and toiletries in TSA-approved bags and store them in the adults’ under-seat (personal item) bags. This way, you can send the other bags through the scanner without opening them. Once those are in the trays, simply empty the contents of the two designated bags. It’s so much easier than digging through every bag at security!
