Our Experience With the Eastpak Carry Pack

We picked up the Eastpak Carry Pack because we needed a flexible, lightweight bag for all of the kids’ gear. Our lifestyle is centered around our minimalist profile and although we like to keep things light, our equipment continually evolves to fit our needs. The kids are growing up fast and their interests changing constantly; they’ve both acquired “stuff” from their birthdays this year. It’s time for a new travel bag!

Having trusted Eastpak before, the Carry Pack felt like the natural “second bag” for our family. And after using it across cities, airports, buses, and random day trips, we’ve gathered a solid picture of what it can (and can’t) do.

What We Needed From a 30L Travel Bag

The Eastpak Carry Pack ticked most of those boxes straight away.

Bear in mind, we don’t travel with hold luggage and we’re already maxed out on our hand-luggage allowance. Our only real option was to add another overhead-sized bag like the Tranverz S or Transit R, but we didn’t want a second set of wheels to manage. So we chose something that could be carried instead… which usually means Rick ends up wearing it.

Using the Carry Pack as a duffel gives us a lightweight, under-10kg overhead bag that fits our setup perfectly and keeps my “did we leave something behind?” anxiety in check. Rick usually takes one for the team and carries it — fully embracing his unofficial travel-day role as Chief Carrier of Everything — but it’s the best system for our family, and he genuinely doesn’t mind the extra workout.

The shoulder strap does take a little adjusting at first, the bag’s shape can feel slightly asymmetrical until you find the sweet spot, but it’s nothing a bit of trial and error won’t sort out. The Eastpak Carry Pack has solved a specific problem for our family: it’s minimal, fits airline size requirements (overhead), and has kept our belongings safe trip after trip. However, it’s not perfect. It doesn’t come with a shoulder strap since back straps are built in by design. It’s inner compartments are built into the inner lining of the main compartment lid: this means you have to be wise when it comes to packing efficiently, particularly if you’re trying to stay within strict airline cabin bag limits. To be fair, these minor issues haven’t affected our overall satisfaction at all – it still a great travel bag.

Honest Review: What We Love About the Eastpak Carry Pack

Lightweight But More Spacious Than It Looks

At just 750 g, the Eastpak Carry Pack is surprisingly lightweight for a structured bag, and somehow manages to hold far more than you’d expect from a 30-litre pack. The boxy, rectangular shape makes packing feel intentional rather than chaotic — no more wrestling with curved, saggy daypacks that swallow your things unevenly. We’ve comfortably fit a few compression packed outfits, our electronics and chargers, snacks for the kids, travel documents, toiletries, a water bottle, and even a laptop without it feeling overstuffed. For a bag this light, it’s genuinely impressive how workable the space is. Be careful not to get too excited, it’s way easier to overpack with all that potential space for stuff.

The trick here is to store one of the keys inside one of the passport holder’s zip compartments, or attach a keyring (for safe keeping). The other key you can keep on you in a zip-pocket or equivalent (easy access).
